The tavern was loud, the hearth was bright, and the stranger’s gold was real. A simple delivery, a sealed parcel, a short trek to a strange land.

About the adventure

This is a campaign of Gothic Horror and Psychological Survival. We will journey through the valley of Barovia, a land steeped in dread, ancient superstitions, and tragic history. This isn't a high-fantasy romp where you are the untouchable superheroes; it is a grim tale of isolation where the environment is as much an enemy as the vampires and werewolves. We will lean heavily into the themes of corruption, the price of power, and the struggle to remain a "good" person in a land that has forgotten the sun. I run an atmospheric game where your character's backstory and choices truly shape the world. While there will be challenging, tactical combat, you cannot simply "hit" your way out of every problem in Barovia; sometimes running away is the smartest move you can make. Whether you are a veteran of the Svalich Woods or a newcomer ready to face your first vampire, all I ask is that you bring a spirit of cooperation. We will use safety tools to ensure the horror stays fun for everyone, but expect a dark, challenging journey from Level 1 to 10.

About me

I’ve been playing and DMing since the 90s, exploring everything from AD&D and MERPS to Vampire: The Masquerade. After a break for fatherhood and life, I’m back to running games and playing, currently diving into 2024 D&D 5e. I’ve also started writing adventures and creating maps (both world and battlemaps). Feel free to check out what I’m working on at patreon.com/wgtngm

Character creation

Creating your character

We will be using the 2024 Core Rules as our mechanical foundation. To keep things balanced yet flexible, legacy options (2014 content) are available; however, if a 2024 version of a spell, item, or rule exists, it will be our primary standard. Character creation will happen before our first session, and I am always available to jump on a call or chat to help you fine-tune your hero. Starting Level: 1 Ability Scores: Point Buy or Standard Array Sources: All official, non-homebrew sourcebooks are permitted. There are a few small mechanical caveats depending on your build, but I’m a "Yes, and..." DM, I’m happy to work with you to ensure your character feels exactly how you imagined. Because Curse of Strahd thrives on mystery and the unknown, I ask that you create a character from anywhere within the standard fantasy realms (such as the Forgotten Realms) who has zero knowledge of Barovia or Count Strahd. This is a "fish-out-of-water" story. You are an outsider stepping into a nightmare you couldn't have dreamed of. To help me weave your personal goals and fears into the campaign's mists, I’ll ask you to fill out a short questionnaire. Your answers will help me ensure that the horrors you face feel uniquely tailored to your character's journey.

The current party

Hi, we'll be starting this Campaign on 02 March, depending on when the current campaign wraps up. Looking for 1 or 2 more players to join the group and fill the gaps. Pretty relaxed group. of adventurers with a range of combat and rp enjoyers.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

The sessions are run on a private Foundry server and voice chat via Discord.

What Stephen Garrett brings to the table

I utilise Foundry VTT as a digital stage for our collective story. You can expect a rich sensory experience where high-definition artwork fuels "theatre of the mind" moments and detailed maps provide a tactical playground for exploration and encounters. The world is further realised through dynamic weather effects, from oppressive mists to driving rain, paired with a soundtrack and ambient soundscapes that shift with the scene's mood. I am a firm believer in strong roleplay and character-driven narratives; the story ultimately belongs to you. I don’t follow a rigid script; instead, I provide the world and the consequences, while you provide the heart. We will work together to weave your character’s specific background into the land's lore, so your triumphs and traumas feel earned. I run challenging encounters where the goal isn't always to "kill everything in the room," as survival is often the only true victory. My style leans toward high-stakes, high-reward. However, I always prioritise the "Rule of Cool" I always welcome a creative solution to a terrifying problem; the answer isn't always on your character sheet.
