About the adventure

The galaxy burns—but you were there before the first spark fell. You are part of a Crusader Host, a rare and powerful fighting force made of Legionaries drawn from many of the Emperor’s finest Legions. Veterans, specialists, and oath-sworn brothers-in-arms, you were forged together in the fires of the Great Crusade and tempered by victories across the stars. You are warriors who should never have stood side by side… and yet your unity may become the one thread that survives what is to come. The campaign begins in the final years of the Great Crusade—a time of glory, triumph, and creeping shadows. As the Imperium expands, you and your brothers will see wonders, crush xenos empires, and witness political tensions that few outside the Legions ever notice. You will be present as the cracks begin to form: subtle signs of discontent, troubling orders from high command, unexplained rifts between Primarchs, and whispers of powers long shunned. Then the Heresy erupts. Across the galaxy, your former allies turn traitor. Worlds that welcomed you burn. Friends you fought beside become enemies you must put down. In the chaos, your diverse Crusader Host becomes something more than a battlefield convenience—it becomes a lifeline. Whether you stand loyal to the Emperor or are torn by divided loyalties, your unity will be tested in fire and betrayal. From the first shock of Isstvan to the final apocalyptic battles of the Heresy, you will forge your own path through one of the most catastrophic wars in human history. You will make impossible choices; spill blood on a hundred battlefields; watch entire Legions shatter; and face the warp-twisted nightmares behind the revolt. The campaign promises: • A sweeping, multi-year narrative, starting in the bright optimism of the Great Crusade and ending in the dark ruin of the Imperium. • A mixed-Legion kill-team, with all the tension, camaraderie, and rivalry that entails. • Front-row seats to key moments of the Heresy, and the chance to determine how your Crusader Host survives them. • Wrath & Glory adapted for Astartes-level, Heresy-era warfare, where every decision has catastrophic consequences. Stand with your brothers. Decide who you truly are. And march into the flames of history. The Horus Heresy awaits. Will you survive it?

About me

Hi, I am a forever DM that has suddenly got a lot of free evening time during the week. I work in education and run games of DnD for my students as well as online for my friends at the weekend. I know that I have above average skills at leading games and I am welcoming to players of all types.

Character creation

Creating your character

We’ll be creating characters before the first session, using Wrath & Glory 2nd Edition rules, with a specific framework tailored for Astartes in the Horus Heresy. All players will be part of a Crusader Host—a mixed group of Legionaries drawn from several different Legions at the end of the Great Crusade. Here’s the process: 1. Use Wrath & Glory 2nd Edition Astartes Rules You should create a Legionary Astartes character following the 2E rules for Space Marines. No Primaris, Deathwatch, or post-Heresy content. Stick to Legiones Astartes material only. 2. We Build Characters Together in a Pre-Session Workshop We’ll schedule a short online session (or chat) to build characters collaboratively. This lets us: • Make sure everyone fits the Crusader Host theme • Balance roles • Tie characters together with shared history • Establish loyalty, bonds, rivalries, and early Legion tensions 3. Choose Your Legion You may pick any Loyalist or Traitor-to-be Legion, as they were before the Heresy begins. This choice will shape: • Your demeanour and doctrine • Starting keywords • Starting abilities and gear • How the Heresy eventually tests your loyalty 4. Starting Tier & Stats Characters begin at Tier 4, representing veteran Astartes of the Great Crusade. We’ll use point-buy as standard in W&G 2E for: • Attributes • Skills • Ascension packages At this tier, your character should feel elite but not yet legendary. 5. Equipment & Wargear Equipment follows the default Astartes loadout for your Legion and specialty. Relics and advanced gear may appear later as rewards and war spoils. 6. No Forbidden Books Needed Use: • Wrath & Glory 2nd Edition Core Rulebook • Any officially released Astartes / Legiones Astartes supplements Do not use: • Primaris or Indomitus-era content • Grey Knights, Deathwatch, Sisters of Battle, or non-Astartes factions • Fan content unless approved 7. Give Your Character a Pre-Heresy Identity You’ll define: • What victories or scars from the Great Crusade shaped you • One bond and one rivalry with another member of the Host • Your stance toward your Primarch and your Legion’s culture • One whispered concern or early warning sign you’ve noticed in the Imperium These seeds will evolve dramatically as the Heresy unfolds.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before the campaign begins, players should complete the following steps to make sure they’re ready for both the technical side of the game and the setting itself: 1. Set Up a Discord Account All communication, scheduling, and out-of-game chat will happen through Discord. Players must have an account and be ready to join the campaign server once the link is shared. 2. Create a Free Forge Account The campaign will run on FoundryVTT hosted via The Forge. Players must: • Visit The Forge website • Create a free account • Log in before the first session to confirm they can access the game world 3. Ensure Browser / Device Compatibility FoundryVTT runs best on a modern web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Players should check: • Their browser is up to date • Their device meets basic Foundry performance needs (Pretty much any modern PC or laptop is fine.) 4. Familiarise Yourself With the Horus Heresy Setting The campaign takes place during one of the most iconic and tragic eras of Warhammer 40,000. Players don’t need encyclopaedic knowledge, but should know the basics of: • The Great Crusade • The Primarchs and their Legions • Who Horus is • How the Heresy begins This can be done by: • Reading some of the Horus Heresy novels • Watching YouTube lore videos (Lutin09, Oculus Imperia, MajorKill, etc.) • Reading short summaries online 5. Think About Your Legion and Concept Before our character creation session, players should come with: • A shortlist of two or three possible Legions • A rough character idea (role, personality, specialty) • Any early thoughts on how your Astartes views the Emperor, their Primarch, and their brothers

What Mr. B brings to the table

As your GM, I aim to create a cinematic and immersive journey through the Horus Heresy, supported by a fully prepared FoundryVTT setup on The Forge. All character sheets, maps, and tools will be ready in advance so gameplay can stay focused on storytelling rather than tech. To bring the setting to life, I’ll use ambient music, atmospheric soundscapes, and occasional character voices, along with short narrative cutscenes like vox recordings or mission briefings. These elements are meant to enhance the tone without overwhelming the game. The campaign will centre on your characters—their loyalties, conflicts, and relationships within the Crusader Host. Your decisions will shape the story as you navigate the Great Crusade and the coming betrayal. Expect personal arcs, meaningful choices, and consequences that follow your actions. Combat will be intense and tactical, reflecting the power and danger of Astartes warfare. Encounters will challenge teamwork and strategy, with dynamic battlefields and memorable foes. I balance the Rules as Written with the Rule of Cool: the mechanics keep things fair and consistent, but cinematic, dramatic moments are always welcome. Above all, you can expect clear communication, player support, and a respectful, collaborative space where everyone can contribute to the story.

Safety

How Mr. B creates a safe table

Player safety and comfort are a top priority at my table. To ensure everyone enjoys the game, I use several approaches: • Lines and Veils: We will discuss boundaries before the campaign. Lines mark topics that will never appear in the game, and veils allow sensitive material to be hinted at or abstracted rather than depicted explicitly. • Regular Breaks: Sessions will include scheduled breaks, giving players time to step away, process events, or discuss issues privately. • Open Door Policy: I encourage players to speak up at any time if something makes them uncomfortable, whether in-session or out-of-session. Concerns will always be taken seriously and addressed respectfully.
