About the adventure
Come along for a free session zero to learn more and make your character! ⭕ When does this adventure take place? The adventure will begin at the Council of Elrond during the end of the Third Age, in an alternative version of the LOTR story. The PCs will form a fellowship to destroy the One Ring, (and they will not be accompanied by any railroading NPCs!). The PCs must decide which route to take to Mordor: Perhaps via the Lonely Mountain? Or maybe try for the Gap of Rohan? But don't assume you know what will happen with any given decision. Perhaps the dwarves didn't perish in Moria? Or perhaps Saruman stays loyal to the Forces of Good? Important events and battles may end up in different places and in different ways. The world will react around your choices, and the Dark Lord will marshal his forces against you in ways that you won't be able to predict. ⛰️ What can I expect with the tone? The aim is to achieve the feeling of the Books and Jackson films. This is not a game suited for edgy grimdark characters, nor is it suitable for wacky Python-esque characters. The aim is to hit that fine balance, where the players take the story and quest seriously, but there is enough warmth and humour to let the bonds of friendships grow. Expect scary moments, and light-hearted relief. All fans are welcome (I won't allow discrimination if you haven't read the books but adore the movies!) 🗡️ What does combat look like? This is not a Strategy Battle Game. 2 minutes of combat won't take 20 minutes of play time. Combat will be fast-paced and you will have to make decisions quickly and under pressure. It will be assumed that you are awesome at killing Orcs, so you won't need to roll for each individual hit or kill. The battles will usually have a main objective, such as reaching the beacons in time, or kicking down siege ladders, or conveying someone vulnerable. So the success of combat is dependant on your creativity in achieving the larger objective, rather than just killing all the orcs in a given scene. Great rolls can have you kill multiple Orcs in one turn. Very bad rolls will result in you being wounded and may have long term consequences. Being wounded enough times will kill you. ⚙️ What will the mechanics feel like? The system is fairly Rules-Light (Perhaps better to say Rules-Medium). Inspired by Kids on Bikes, it will allow you a lot of creativity to create a character with the skills important to you, and to incorporate that into the game mechanics in a satisfying way that feels fair. And it means that you are not required to do any excessive reading or homework before making a character!

Creating your character
Every character will have the following attributes: Affinity with Nature Strength Knowledge Athleticism Stealth Inner Light It is up to you to rank these attributes for your character to determine what dice you get to use for relevant skill checks. For instance, Frodo may have a distribution of Inner Light - D20 Stealth - D12 Knowledge - D10 Affinity with Nature- D8 Athleticism - D6 Strength - D4 By prioritising Inner Light and Stealth, Frodo has a better chance to roll high on rolls relating to resisting corruption, courage, burglary, and hiding etc Arwen may have: Affinity with Nature - D20 Athleticism - D12 Inner Light - D10 Knowledge - D8 Strength - D6 Stealth - D4 By prioritising Affinity with Nature and Athleticism, Arwen has a better chance to roll high on rolls relating to forestry, animal communion, swordfighting and speed. Every skill check is up for discussion; the player can always make a case for and argue how their chosen action aligns with a given attribute for checking. This is a non comprehensive set of examples of what skills may fall under which particular attributes: 1. Affinity with Nature - Skills with ranged weapons - Keen eyes; noticing unusual things - Familiarity with animals - Wilderness and survival skills - Tracking and following - Herbcraft and foraging 2. Strength - Mastery of heavy weapons - Destroying things - Lifting heavy objects - Pain Endurance - Withstanding injuries 4. Knowledge - Very studied with intrinsic deep historical and cultural knowledge - Understanding of structures, where entrances or weak points may be, layouts of cities and mechanical devices - Intuiting enemy weaknesses - Diplomacy - Languages - Finding hidden magic in objects 5. Athletic - Proficiency in bladed weapons. (Swordsmanship etc) - High relflexes - Speed - Running, leaping, swimming, climbing - Initiative priority and ability to interrupt enemy actions 6. Stealth (Burglary) - Moving in unseen ways - Hiding - Keen ears - Soft social skills like persuasion, charm and trickery - Stealing things - Disguising - Discerning the most important objects in a space - Answering riddles - Opening locked doors 6. Inner light - Strength of will - Courage - Causing terror in your enemies - Commanding presence - Resisting corruption, and venoms - Finding light, rekindling flames and summoning starlight - Inspiring comrades - Some perception into Wraith realities This is a magic-light system, but you will be awarded limited tokens for "Blessings of the Valar". Tokens will be rare and distributed at the start of a session or awarded for excellent roleplaying. This will allow you to perform a magical action. The type of magic you want to perform will be determined by a check against the most relevant attribute and the difficulty will be determined by how ambitious the magic is. (If you wish to a play a wizard type character, then you will be awarded more Blessings of the Valar, but this will be balanced by nerfing one dice)
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Discord and Roll20 accounts are required. Links will be available upon sign-up. The most important thing you can do to prepare is to think about what sort of character you'd like to be! Start daydreaming! And maybe re-watch/re-read the Lord of the Rings to get in the mood!
What Alexander brings to the table
I take immersion very seriously and so I supply a LOT of custom visuals and background music. The action-scenes will be largely Theatre of the Mind, with certain exceptions where maps and tokens would improve the story-telling. I generally embrace the Rule of Cool, and reward players for excellent Role-Playing and creativity.
Homebrew rules
I enjoy the Exploding Dice mechanic! I'm happy to roll in any Homebrew Rules pitched during Session Zero that the group feel is a good fit for the game.

How Alexander creates a safe table
A Lines a Veils Google Doc will be sent to you before Session Zero. I will review this document before we have our Session Zero. During Session Zero we will set our expectations for the game, and establish boundaries of what is appropriate in game and what is appropriate within the Discord Chat.
