About the adventure

SLA Industries - the dominant corporate power in the World of Progress. Why would you want to work for anyone else? Ever since you were a kid you were wowed by the exploits of SLA Operatives on the TV. Violence sold as a lifestyle choice, the good guys hauling the bad guys out into the bright lights of justice. Corporate subversion and suppressor powers stamped out in glorious technicolour thanks to Third Eye News. One day, you told yourself, you would by the one in the SLA branded armour with the SLA branded weapons, up there on TV screens kicking down doors and taking names to the roar of the adoring crowd. Gangs, serial killers, enemy agents - none of them would stand in your way. From the glittering skyscrapers of uptown, to the lowliest, dank appartments of downtown, everyone would know your name. And now you've got your chance. It's your first day out of the training college at Meny and you're about to be given your first assignment...and your expectations of just how glamorous the operative lifestyle is are about to be rudely shattered... --- PCs will play brand new operatives - fresh out of the academy and ready to cut their teeth on whatever the World of Progress throws at them. This game will focus on introducing players to the world of SLA Industries and give them a chance to make a name for themselves...or find out what happens to those that don't. For those familiar with SLA, I'm using the version 2.0 ruleset but the background and setting of version 1.0. There are certain changes they made in 2.0 that just don't "feel SLA" to me and I'm choosing to ignore them. As this is intended to be an ongoing campaign, provision will be made for new players joining as and when is appropriate. It's also assumed that anyone joining doesn't know anything about SLA - this is very beginner friendly. The overall length of the campaign will be based on player interest. I'm very theatre of the mind and roleplay heavy. This is not a tactical wargame. I'd much rather hear you describe the cool things your character intends to do rather than "Er...I move my counter four hexes that way." SLA Industries tends to brand itself as "splatter punk". While that term feels made up and isn't particularly descriptive (honestly, the amount of times people slap the word "punk" on the end of something and assume it's a thing is scary...) what IS helpful is to say that this is a horror game at heart. It looks like it's a sci-fi dystopian setting, but scratch beneath the veneer and there's lots of nasties waiting there. Therefore, a session 0 is essential as is an acknowledgement that mature and dark themes will be present. Finally, it goes without saying that everyone is just here to have a good time. There will be zero tolerance of anyone who seeks to be disruptive, offensive or make other players uncomfortable. This is pretendy-fun-time-games (albeit in a dystopia) so please no racism, sexism, homophobia or any of that other awful stuff.

About me

Long time GM - I started in the 1980s and have been the "forever GM" since then. Honestly, I have more fun running games than playing so I'm looking forward to sharing that love with others! I'm definitely not a rules heavy GM - I'm much more about letting players explore their characters and interact, and I'm happiest when I'm sitting back listening to interparty drama! Over the years I've run a ton of different systems with a heavy focus on World of Darkness. However, remember that part about loving interparty drama? Well, my favourite games to run are Paranoia and Alien - I love myself a bit of PVP and these settings perfectly let players explore this aspect of TTRPGs safely! When it comes to running games, I'm a massive fan of music and sound effects and I love using them to help build atmosphere. So, if you fancy checking out games that are slightly different from D&D (although I can happily run that too!) please let me know!

Character creation

Creating your character

This will all be covered in session 0. We will be using the SLA Industries 2.0 rulebook and character creation within that. Nothing from any expansions will be used. Pre-gens will be available on request. I will take everyone through character creation step by step so no need to do any prep beforehand. SLA is a relatively obscure game so I don't expect new players to know much about it.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A Discord account and a Roll20 account are all you'll need. Once you've signed up I'll provide you a link to the server and the VTT.

What Iain brings to the table

As mentioned above, this is largely going to be theatre of the mind. I've played in enough games where people get hung up on battle maps and counters and before you know it we're playing Warhammer... I will always make use of music and sound effects - this really helps with immersion and draws you in the TotM. I also generally don't do voices - which is to say I don't populate my games with a meangerie of different accents from all across the world. A) I'm not very good at this and B) it often makes little narrative sense having one character sound like he's from rural England and another one like the he's from the Deep South. However, this isn't to say that I'm discouraging you from doing voices. If that's your thing have at it - I love when my players immerse themselves. I REALLY enjoy when players get into character and when there's a dynamic between party members. That's where the real magic happens. One final thing - if you ask anyone who's played in a game I've run they'll probably tell you that my favourite trope is "actions have consequences". I'm a meticulous notetaker so things will come back to haunt your character. This is all part of the fun though - I'm not one of those "killer GMs" who's out to "beat" the party.

Safety

How Iain creates a safe table

In session 0 we will go over what people don't want to see in the game. And there's no judgement here and you don't need to explain anything. If you don't want to see spiders in the game just say that and - POOF - no spiders. No need for anyone to dig into why. Likewise, I like to go over, at the end of each session, what people liked and what they'd like to see more of / less of. Also, my table is a safe space. If at any time anything makes you uncomfortable say so and we'll fade to black. Even though it's a horror game I'm not out to upset anyone. Obviously the same should go for interactions between players too.
