About the adventure

Welcome to Hamilton by Night, a Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition play-by-post game! The game will take over Discord and will use the Inconnu bot for dice rolls (alternatives are also possible!). This game will be a small cooperative group game or various solo ones with at least one post by the ST every day, if not more. All other options are open and will be decided together during Session Zero. Setting Info: Welcome to "the Hammer" - Hamilton, Ontario. One of the larger municipal areas in Canada, Hamilton has stood tall for two centuries. The War of 1812 displaced a prominent bloodline of Brujah and an opposing house of Toreador. The two clans took possession of the city and split it equally: the northern industrial center belonged to the Brujah while the downtown core and Mountain were invested in by the Toreador. The peace was tense but never broke since both clans belonged to the Camarilla. But the recent departure of Clan Brujah from the sect has left the blue-collared city in turmoil as open hostiles and ancient grudges arise and blood begins to drown out the streets. Who do you serve? Will you make alliances or carve out your own domain in the chaos? Only blood and time will tell.

About me

Hi there, my name is Chris but I also go by Bearded Boggan due to playing way too much Changeling: the Dreaming over the years. I am a Canadian who has been playing and running various TTRPGs such as Dungeons and Dragons, Changeling: the Dreaming, Vampire the Masquerade for the last three decades. I also am a published game writer and designer with over 50 publications (mostly from the hay day of the 3.5 DnD OGL) as well as a small press publishing company called "Mad Scotsman Games" I've run since 2003. My degree in English Literature actually ended up helping me with a career outside of teaching! Woo! I tend to be the forever DM but that works out well because I love telling immerse stories and doing collaborative storytelling with my players. If you are looking for games with a heavy roleplaying focus, deep lore and everything in between, look no further! I look forward to gaming with you all.

Character creation

Creating your character

Books Used: All characters are created using the base book character creation rules in the VtM 5th edition Corebook and the Player's Guide. All other official sources will be discussed on a case by case basis. Sea of Time and Additional Creation Points: We will be using the neonate rules from the Sea of Time part of the game. Basically that means you start with 15 experience points to round out your character. Thin blooded characters and fledglings will ALSO have the 15 experience points gifted on character creation. We will only be using Lore Sheets on a case by case basis and there will be no non-standard specialized skills. Please use only the base sheet ones. All characters start with an additional point in a clan Discipline (or one of the chosen three for Caitiffs etc), to a maximum of three points during character creation. All characters received an additional three points of Advantages such as backgrounds, merits, etc. Standard rules apply otherwise. Clans: All clans in the two rulebooks used are allowed. The common clans in Hamilton are: Brujah, Hecata, Toreador, Tremere, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Ventrue, Caitiff. All others exist but are few in number. Sects: We will be playing as Camarilla or Anarch sect aligned characters. No Sabbat allowed. Independent characters are allowed but will be at a disadvantage since Sects play heavily into the game setting. We will be using the standard Merits and Flaws rules presented in the Corebook. Please work in a reason why your character has these traits in their backstory. There is a list of some that are banned or restricted: Banned merits: Uncle Fangs Restricted Merits: (Please contact the ST to discuss): Loresheets (must have ST approval before selecting) Unbondable Object of Power Untouchable Banned Flaws: Methuselah's Thirst Ingrained Discipline Flaws (we will not be using these) Befouling Vitae Restricted Flaws: (Please contact the ST to discuss): Bondslave Organovore Blatant Diablierist Walking Omen Word-Scarred Faith Proof Character History/Backstories: Backstories should be a couple paragraphs at least but beyond that, I'm open to length. Just, please no more than one page of backstory. Artwork: Please find some visual art or reference for your character. I will provide the same with locations, npcs and other setting elements.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

This game will take place on Discord and use the Inconnu dice bot. Please have a Discord account for joining this game. This game is built as either a solo or duet game (one player or two) or a cooperative group game. Character sheets will be done using a fillable character sheet or any other sort of character generator such as Demiplane (see below) you'd prefer, just as long as I can have a copy of the sheet as a pdf. We do have a Demiplane group set up for character generation as well and I have shared my content for ease of creation. The link for the group will be provided once you join the game.

What Chris MacKay brings to the table

I will provide a rich setting with themes of personal horror, political intrigue and everything in between. We will build the game you want to play together. The other themes we explore will be up to the players and will be discussed during Session Zero. Combat will take place but will not be the main focus of the game - that will be heavy roleplay and collaborative storytelling. I tend to favour the Rule of Cool over using the Rules as a strict "you must do it this way or not at all" well, rule. They are guidelines and I will side with the mechanics but if we gotta twist it a bit to make it cooler for the story and players, let's do it!

Homebrew rules

House rules will be posted in depth on the Discord server but otherwise are in the character creation section.

How Chris MacKay creates a safe table

There will be a Session Zero in which we will go over any soft and hard limits the players have as well as talk about the mutual lines and veils we want to establish for the story. Vampire can be a very heavy and horrific game but we can do it comfortably for all as well.
