About the adventure

The rebels in Star Wars, rogue smugglers in Firefly, outlaws in Blakes Seven, pirates in Treasure Planet, renegades in Mass Effect, and bounty hunters in Cowboy Bebop. There are many examples of scoundrels in space, and Scum and Villainy is a Forged in the Dark game that explores all of these tropes in a royalty free way! First we'll choose a spaceship and type of crew to build the game around based on what sort of themes you want to explore: The Stardancer for smugglers, the Cerberus for bounty hunters, and the Firedrake for rebels against the Galactic Hegemony. Each ship has various special abilities to help the characters succeed at their daring missions. Then we'll make a crew of adventurers, with 7 different character sheets we can create practically any type of sci-fi hero that you can imagine. The final step of setting the situation is when we discuss the various factions that have already interacted with the crew, both friends and enemies. Now with our own customised setting we can launch right into daring missions where you're always pushing the limits and taking big risks. Just like your favourite sci-fi heroes, you too can fight against overwhelming odds and not only survive, but prosper! The exact nature of each campaign will be unique and customised based on all the choices that the players make, as well as the fate of the dice.

About me

I jumped into game-mastering in 2019 with a group of friends, a Dragonheist book, and a lot of uncertainty. Almost immediately my players caught be by surprise by doing something unexpected, and introduced me to the fun and excitement of improvised, group storytelling. Since then I've played an average of once a week, exploring a variety of games, and almost always being a game master. In 2025 I hosted my first convention games with total strangers, which was a wonderful mix of nerves and excitement. The more TTRPGs that I play the more that I enjoy the improvisational nature of them, and I'm always excited to see where the story goes next. I started with D&D (as most people do), and since then I've explored Motherboard, Pathfinder 2e, the Silver Road, Forged in the Dark, and Daggerheart. I'm a fan of player-guided stories, with a strong leaning towards The Rule of Cool and narrative-first games.

Character creation

Creating your character

This game system works best when characters are created as a group together, so this will be part of the free session 0. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, I'll gladly guide you through the character creation process. We'll be using roll20's built-in character sheets, which will handle all the rolls for us and keep track of in-game statistics.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We'll be using a Discord server to manage voice chat, session summaries, and in-game lore. You'll need to be able to connect to Discord with a reliable microphone and speakers/headphones. *insert discord link here* Gameplay will be mostly Theatre of the Mind on roll20, which will handle all the mechanical things such as character sheets, faction reputations, and the ship's sheet. You'll need a PC, laptop, or tablet device to access roll20 while also accessing Discord for voice chat. *insert roll20 link here*

What Harry brings to the table

My purchase of the Scum and Villainy module for roll20 will make it a breeze to keep track of the in-game mechanics. I'll be creating a customised campaign based entirely on the decisions made during character creation, populating the world with NPCs who have their own motivations and personalities (even if my voices for them might not be the best). The discord will be populated with session summaries after every game, game rules, and faction summaries. With the narrative-first Forged in the Dark game system, every situation is dealt using the same style of action rolls. This system taught me to value the Rule of Cool, so please feel free to ask if you want to do something a little silly and exciting.

Safety

How Harry creates a safe table

The free session 0 will not only cover character creation, but also a discussion of Lines and Veils which will be recorded in the Discord server. This document can be added to if anything occurs in the game that we didn't anticipate, it is an ever-evolving document. X, N, and O cards can be sent via message directly to me, or typed publicly in the roll20 chat. Whatever the individual feels is most comfortable for them. I also employ an open door policy, allowing players to come and go as they please, and for whatever reason. Also characters can be changed at any point if anyone feels that they aren't enjoying anything about their character.
