About the adventure

Cortex Prime with advancement! Players new to Cortex RPG always welcome and encouraged to join. ___________ The ending of the fifth age of Tidwell has arrived, and the sixth age is preparing to dawn. Tidwell has always been a land of soaring achievements, spectacular and otherworldly feats and fanciful denizens. The peoples of Tidwell believe the world to be pinned to the sky by its two world trees. These are the Tree of Life in the far western kingdoms, and the Tree of Strength in the far eastern wastes. Through each age, the Creator has wrought new creatures and heroes from the formless ether, and released them onto the world. The fifth age saw the advent of the Pirate Ship Oblivion and its crew of Rainbow Apes, the birth of the city-sized spider Starstrider, and the carving of the Raven Apostle into the Orange Mountain. The emperor of Tidwell , who harkens from a time even before the first age, is the Bearman Ono. He is crudely-shapen, bearing the marks of those from before the dawn of Tidwell when the land was void and desolate; when life had yet to be spoken into the slopes of Rhodia. Ono was the first forerunner, but there were two others who came into existence before the first age of the world – the Wishing Turtle and the Spirit Ichida. When the first age dawned these two creatures chose solitude over life with Tidwell's new residents, leaving Ono alone to establish a kingdom. The Wishing Turtle established itself at the Southern Mesa in Gyhrra, a land of heat, desolation and aggressive living plants. The Spirit Ichida haunts The Invisible city in Forestdown, a lush arboreal landscape filled with rotting undergrowth, inexplicable dancing lights, and unsettling beasts. Here at the end of the fifth age, however, a new force has arrived. A force not from the creator, but from an unnamed foreign influence. Reveille, the capital of all of Tidwell, has been thrown into chaos with the arrival of the Ministry of the Sixth Form. Its leader titles herself The Declaimer. She is a woman with a twisted back and dark features hidden behind a thick white veil. She has declared herself to herald the dawn of the new age, and tells of the coming death of the Tree of Life and the withering of the Tree of Strength. As per custom, Ono has accepted this staking of a new age, and begun the days long ceremony of the renewal. Ono leads the herald and a representative of each age except the first to the peak of Rhodia, where he world book will be opened. The pages of the fifth age, made from the silk of the World Moth, will be burnt. New pages are then fashioned of the herald's choosing, and the beginning of the new age will be written. Before any pages are burnt, or fashioned, or even opened - news arrives of the advent of five new arrivals via the Storied Altar. Arrivals which should not happen until after the turning of the new age. Those are your characters

About me

I'm a 41 year old GM from Michigan, and the host of popular Actual Play podcast What's in The Rift. Previously on Rusty Quill, now on Fable & Folly and streaming, What's in The Rift is a Cortex Prime actual play podcast. I have experience running everything from FATE to Daggerheart to Roll for Shoes. That includes all the big names, like Pathfinder (1 & 2), D&D 5e, Shadowrun and more. My games tend toward philosophical concepts and moral/ethical dilemmas, with less focus on fights and more focus on mind-melting stories.

Character creation

Creating your character

You do not need to own any source materials for the game in order to play! If you are unfamiliar with Cortex or dice pool systems, I will teach you everything you need to know as part of the game itself. As with most Cortex games, you will need to be introduced to the modlist for this particular game. I will provide you with a custom character sheet, and instructions for filling it out, and supporting documents to help you understand how character progressions work. A free Session 0 will consist of introductions, and then starting to build our character concepts and sheets. I will work with you to craft everything necessary to start telling this story together, so that by Session 1 we are ready to hit the ground running.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Come with a Discord account, some pen and paper, and a good imagination.

What Josh Burgess brings to the table

Some things to expect from me in this campaign: 1. Tight, self-contained story elements 2. Numerous character interactions with NPCs (and yes, character voices) 3. Ambient music 4. A loose, flowing vibe. I welcome all manner of wackiness (so long as its not distracting from other players' fun) 5. A wealth of custom artwork, assets, and system features. 6. Clear, understandable character advancement 7. Willingness to work 1-on-1 with players to both teach the system and tailor aspects of your character to something you'll have a blast playing.

Homebrew rules

We'll be using a custom specialty-tree mod written specifically for this game that will bring elements of classes and "leveling up" to Cortex, a system which often eschews those things.

Safety

How Josh Burgess creates a safe table

A link to the Lines & Veils document will be provided before session 0. You may provide an X-card at any point for any reason in the game either by verbal call-out, text, or direct message. When approaching any veil topics, I will actively poll for O? to ensure we spend no more time on a topic than is comfortable for any of my players.
