About the adventure

The legendary arch-lich Vecna seeks to complete a dark ritual which will destroy all the gods and remake the world according to his whim. Can a group of heroes stop him? Characters will travel across the planes, adventuring in iconic Dungeons and Dragons campaign settings like Eberron, Ravenloft, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Avernus, Planescape, and Spelljammer. As always, I include lots of bonus content not included in the official game module and I leave plenty of room for character development, which creates a unique experience for each class. This adventure does include combat, but players will also need to rely on their wits to look for clues, solve puzzles, and retrieve magical items. Learners who enjoy roleplaying will find their talents in need, with plenty of opportunities to shine in this adventure. New players are always welcome! I am happy to teach the game as we play!

About me

I've been a professional DM since 2018, when I began teaching on a similar platform for youth (Outschool). My creative writing classes were popular but what my students really wanted was actual D&D gameplay - so I began running games for teens. I love providing teens with an affirming, safe place to play Dungeons and Dragons. New players are welcome in my games, which are always friendly to LGBTQ and neurodiverse people. Most of my players stay with me for years! However, since Outschool is meant for youth, that means that my players eventually age out when they turn 19. I'm excited about branching out to StartPlaying, and hopefully some of my former students will be able to join me here as well! As a shy, awkward person who knows how to fake it (most of the time), I totally understand how nerve-wracking it can be to join a new group and I know how difficult it can be to speak up in a crowd. My goal is to make fellow socially anxious people as comfortable as possible, which means being flexible if things get overwhelming, and checking in often, giving quieter people openings to join in when they want. I've taught 1221 learners in the 7 years I've taught on Outschool, with 411 reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5 stars, and I'm in the top 10% of earners on Outschool. You can find reviews on my teacher profile: https://outschool.com/teachers/Rachel-Raum

Character creation

Creating your character

You should create a 3rd level character prior to our first session. Please *only* use 5e 2014 Legacy content. If you need help making a character, please ask! For stats, please use either standard array or point buy.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need to have a Discord account and join the server for this game prior to your first session. If you'd like to download MapTool and join the server during our session, that's fine - if not, I'll screen share.

What Rachel brings to the table

I'll provide you with a fun, supportive space to play D&D. My goal is for everyone to feel comfortable. I don't use ambient music because many people (including myself) find it distracting. If you need any accommodations to make the session more accessible for you, please let me know. I provide detailed maps for both combat and noncombat encounters, as well as detailed verbal descriptions. I have many tokens for you to choose from for your character, or you can send me art you'd like to use. My DM style focuses on creating a rich narrative with meaningful roleplay. You will be challenged - both in combat and out of combat. However, a collaborative relationship between all of us is important - you'll never feel like like it's you vs me. Rules: Most players consider me to be relatively strict regarding the rules. However, I also I reward creativity and out of the box thinking, as long as it doesn’t step on another character’s mechanical identity (class features, species abilities, feats). I tend to go easy on the "bookkeeping" side, tracking rations, ammunition, etc. Content Sharing: joining my campaign on DnD Beyond is available for content sharing, but not required. I also share a Google Doc for keeping track of NPCs, locations, quests, etc. Players are welcome to help keep the Doc up to date.

Homebrew rules

Flanking grants advantage. Drinking a potion yourself is a bonus action; administering it to another is an action. Ammunition is automatically retrieved at the end of combat, unless I specify it was lost or destroyed. Encumbrance and the loading property of weapons is ignored, within reason.

Safety

How Rachel creates a safe table

During session zero, we will discuss expectations and safety tools. I will send a Lines and Veils document and discuss during session zero. Players' preferences are allowed to be kept just between the two of us. Every player is allowed to use the X-Card tool whenever needed. We will immediately stop and adjust. During session zero, we will discuss options for how to signal this. Players are allowed to step away at any time. Should this happen during combat, your turn will be skipped until you return. Debriefing may occur during the session if time permits; otherwise, debriefing will happen on the Discord server.
