About the adventure

Boston is a city saturated with magic, supernatural threats, and endless potential for the future. Will that future be one of doom or salvation? New threats, thought impossible, are rising, and you are at the center of it, uniquely positioned to shape the future of a reality under siege. In Rude Awakening, you are a new mage, mind freshly opened to your magical potential at the start of our chronicle. Your story will take you from your first exposure to the world of Mage to a fully developed will worker capable of enshrining your deeds in history. While knowledge of the system is certainly a plus, you can absolutely learn about the world and the system along with your character. You need to know who you are more than what you can do, because learning what you're capable of is what the Mage's journey is all about.

About me

My name is Chris and I've been running games consistently for the past ten years, with periodic games for the fifteen years prior. My preferred systems are World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu, and I currently run games of both Vampire: The Masquerade and Call of Cthulhu for friends. I also have a few years experience with Mage: The Awakening, 2nd Edition. My games have run from one-shots to multi-year campaigns. While I have run modules, such as Masks of Nyarlathotep or Horror on the Orient Express, my games are primarily written by myself. I much prefer theater of the mind to miniatures and tactical games.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be made in the free session 0 in alignment with the core book: Mage: The Awakening 2nd Edition. In addition, I will have a few pre-generated characters to choose from. These will be starting level characters, as they are freshly awakened by the events of the story. For new players this is an excellent story for learning about the world along with your character.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We will be making use of Foundry/Forge for dice and character sheets. Discord will handle our voice/video. A webcam and microphone are required so we can all experience this as intended.

What Chris brings to the table

We will be using Theater of the Mind for the majority of our chronicle, but, as we will be utilizing Foundry for dice and character sheets, background imagery and themes will be on display. This is roleplay heavy, combat light, and character driven. I love how this chronicle develops characters and showcases what makes them tick. Mage is sometimes seen as "too much game to play", so we will be streamlining some elements to make for smoother, more engaging play. It's all about telling a great story as a group.

Homebrew rules

Some elements of the system, especially relating to experience points through beats, will be modified. This is our collective story and we progress together, with XP given out on a consistent and group wide basis.

Safety

How Chris creates a safe table

Our Discord will house a safety channel for topics deemed off the table or for careful consideration. At any point, a player can give me a topic, openly or privately, that they would like removed from the game. There is no vote, no veto, and no explanation need be given. While there are horror elements and drama, we all deserve to experience those within our own bounds.
