About the adventure

"MASKS is first and foremost about a team of young superheroes. They’re friends, rivals, love interests, allies…and always teammates, joint stars of their comic, and superheroes. They’re young; they’ve got abilities that make them special; they wear costumes; they use codenames; they save people; and they do it together. They’re growing up in Halcyon City, a place with plenty of older supers who provide an endless clamor of voices telling them who to be, and these young heroes are all trying to figure out their own way!" - Masks the New Generation page 7 Masks: A New Generation full of action, youthful angst, and dazzling bravery. Take on the roles of members of the latest generation of superheroes, young adults trying to figure out who they are and what kind of heroes they want to be! This campaign is set in the same Halycon City setting as my previous MASKs campaign. An alternative history US year set in the futuristic date of 2028. In the last three years there has been an explosion of new metahumans.. Some of turned to crime, others have attempted to pursue their own brand of heroism, and the rest struggle to find their place! About me

Hello my name is James, I have been in the hobby for almost ten years and have been a Game Master for several games a week for the last four years. I have a very wide spectrum of interest's and am always interested learning and trying out a new game systems! While I usually prefer to use pre-published campaigns as opposed to homemade I have recently both authored and ran several of my player groups through a custom setting based upon World of Darkness. I have successfully ran over three dozen modules from diverse variety of game systems including but not limited to Pathfinder 2e, Starfinder, Shadow of the Demon Lord, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4e, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Call of Cthulhu 7e, Delta Green, Trail of Cthulhu, Savage Worlds and Vampire the Masquerade. I am always eager to learn new things and meet new people.

Character creation

Creating your character

In MASKS, you play characters who are approximately 16 to 20 years old (with allowances made for stuff like the alien who’s actually 1,000 years old and is still a teenager in mind and body). They’re trying to figure out who they are, but they’re not so young as to have no idea at all. The trouble is all these adults around them, telling them what to do and who to be. It’s the story we all face as we grow up. We don’t just become exactly what our parents, teachers, or mentors want us to be...and we don’t completely abandon or ignore what they say, either, whether we want to or not. Each player chooses a single playbook at the start of play and uses it to create their character. No two players can pick the same playbook; because MASKS focuses on the team dynamics of these young heroes, the members of the team need to be disparate and distinct. For playbooks I would prefer ones from the Core Rulebook anything else will need to be ran by me. To prevent overlap and help build the team, playbooks will be chosen over session zero!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I will be using two primarily platforms for this Masks campaign, discord for voice chat and foundry vtt for rolling dice and keeping track of play books. Players do not need to own the Masks A New Generation book as I own a copy. Equipment-wise players are expected to bring a desktop computer or laptop with a stable internet connection and a working microphone. Voice chat and the majority of text messages will be done through a discord server, I will provide the invitation link to the server when players after join the game. It is preferred that players have a noise free environment or set push to talk when there is much background noise. Players will need an account for Foundry VTT and a PC that can meet the requirements to run the software. Players are not expected to bring rulebooks to sessions but they can be useful for clarifying certain rules during a break. Lastly, a working familiarity with the premise of Masks is highly encouraged but not essential.

What James brings to the table

Hello, my name is James, I have been game mastering for the better part of a decade. This will be my second masks campaign. Each of these games had different interpretations and focuses and I wanted something different. This is ultimately why I choose Masks a New Generation, because it is not just a Supers game it is instead a game about coming of age and struggling with identity! I love to focus on and build the relationships of my players to eachother and the world around them!

Safety

How James creates a safe table

Within every gaming session I like to have at least one short break towards the middle and some time after the game to discuss Stars and Wishes. I will say that this campaign will be slightly more adult than some other masks campaigns. I would like to use the campaign as a means to tackle social issues though the lens of superherorics. But I understand people have different comfort levels. I am always trying to find ways to make everyone feel more safe so feel free to reach out to me if you ever have any concerns.
