About the adventure

Take on the role of Rogue Trader Captain Hector Montreaux on the very worst day of his life. His priceless voidship, Bright Sword, was scouting the Cicatrix Maledictum for Lord Captain Jakel Varonius. Seeking the way forward to the remote, but strategic, Gilead system, as he had done faithfully for more than a year. He doesn't even know what happened. He awakes in an infirmary under siege by demons & mutants. The ship adrift in the warp, the Officers fates unknown, the vox system seemingly possessed, and everywhere he goes his crew is mutating into monsters and killing their shipmates. This is a introductory, solo-play, 40k one-shot horror adventure which serves as a springboard to my Wrath & Glory: 'Round a Guttering Candle Campaign. Play as Rogue Trader Hector Montreaux or make up your own Rogue Trader or Imperial Navy Captain to face the horrors of the Warp. Any player whose PC survives can bring their character (& experience & loot!) into the campaign and recieve a $5 discount off their first session. Naturally, there can be only one Captain, so early-bird gets the worm. Subsequent players can introduce Senior Officers, Ratings (Skilled Crewmen), Astropaths, a Navigator, a Seneschal, a Tech-priest, or even a passenger, etc... Each player will build upon the story of that dark day in the warp and help set the stage for the campaign's opening adventure. So, bring your vac-suit, your war face and as much ammo as you can carry, because to survive is to win.

About me

My name is David and I'm a forever-GM. I was bitten by the big, bad red box at age nine and the rest, as they say, is history. I've been playing and running tabletop RPGs for 45 years and it is still my passion. I have also always enjoyed teaching new players and systems. Teaching others to play and GM has always struck me as the best way to be a good custodian to the hobby. Something I became mindful of after owning an LGS for a few years. Over the decades I have gotten a lot of practice writing and running several popular IP based RPGs. I'm particularly fond of the Star Wars, Star Trek, The One Ring & Warhammer 40k campaigns I've been fortunate enough to GM in the last two decades. On a more recent note, I have begun running Forbidden Lands campaigns. I've fallen completely for the setting and the system. Free League really outdid their selves with that particular work. The last few months I have been learning my way around Foundry VTT. I couldn't think of a better way to learn the VTT than run something on it. So, that's a glimpse into my past and a word about my present. As for the future, I sincerely look forward towards meeting more of the community here. See you at the table, David

Character creation

Creating your character

I will bring players into Foundry and oversee PC creation. They will be playing Tier 2 characters. Senior officer's archetypes not found in the canon ruleset for Rogue trader or Naval vessels will be drawn from Pax Imperialis or custom patterned after them.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

1) Basic knowledge of the player side of Foundry VTT will be useful. If necessary, they will receive tutelage in the basics prior to play. 2) A semi-modern computer and decent internet connection are necessary. 3) Microphone and camera. 4) Discord access.

What Fire Mountain brings to the table

It's a horror story. In space. In a supernaturally based, emotionally hyper-sensitive and probably bi-polar, pseudo-sub dimension. With DEMONS. Clear expectations? Ok. Expect death, blood, death, screaming, death, explosive decompression, death, body horror, death, possession, death, megaviolence, more death, malfunctions, death, paranoia, death, desperation, death, overreaction, death, panic induced incompetence, death, demons fingerpainting walls with bodily fluids, more death, betrayal, accidental ordnance detonations, death, secondary explosions, more death aaaaand last, but definitely not least, sabotage & even more death, quite possibly including your PC's. Oh yeah, and if you are entertaining, I might speak in a British accent and, if we have time, have a demon play a sonata on a piano with someone else's fingers. While drinking a martini. That was shaken. INSIDE the bartender.

Homebrew rules

Pax Imperialis. 724 pages of it. 'Nuff said. No, seriously, we're not using anywhere near all of it. This is a one-shot. We'll use the rest in the campaign! Unless we don't.

Safety

How Fire Mountain creates a safe table

There will be a link to my Lines & Veils on Google Docs. My table rules include no PVP, no abusive behavior (including reaction abuse) and directs all players to avoid judgement of anything or anyone with the only exception made for my game-related judgements. I maintain an open-door policy. Any player is free to stand up and walk away at any time for as long as they may need. No reason necessary. No questions asked. Please note that this does NOT normally stop the game. Because it's usually a group game. This is a solo game. Stopping the game for a no questions asked departure would only cause it to resume just at the possibly traumatic moment that possibly caused the exit to begin with. And that would be nonsensical. After the game we will do a round of Stars and Wishes because this tool has a positive impact. I find it helps build players appreciation for group dynamics as well as sharpening anticipation for the next session.
