About the adventure

Welcome to Night Vale: The Roleplaying Game You’ve heard the radio show; now you too can become a citizen of Night Vale! In this collaborative storytelling game, you create strange, wonderful, and unsettling adventurers in the small desert community run by your friendly local radio host. Players take on the role of Citizens — residents of Night Vale who might be baristas, librarians, scientists, or people who definitely aren’t angels. Together, you’ll explore mysteries both civic and cosmic. Why is the Dog Park forbidden? What hums beneath the sand outside town? What exactly did you sign when you got your new apartment lease? Whether you’re tracing a pirate broadcast through Skeleton Gorge, confronting the Sheriff’s Secret Police, or trying to survive the Public Library, your group will uncover secrets that should probably stay hidden—and have a lot of laughs doing it. Gameplay focuses on character choices, community storytelling, and the delightfully surreal tone fans of the Welcome to Night Vale podcast know by heart. Dice rolls decide moments of uncertainty, but everything else comes from imagination, teamwork, and improvisation. The rules are simple to learn, and the story grows from conversation, not charts or heavy math. No one “wins” in Night Vale, but everyone gets a good story out of it. This game is for new players who want their first taste of roleplaying in a world that’s equal parts eerie, funny, and heartfelt. It’s for fans of the podcast who want to step into the broadcast booth and see what’s really behind the static. It’s for anyone who’s ever looked up at the night sky, seen something they shouldn’t, and thought, yes—this feels like home. 🌵 Weird, Wonderful Setting: Step right into the strange little desert town you’ve only heard about on the radio. Every session feels like an episode of Welcome to Night Vale. 🎙️ Easy to Learn: Uses a D20 system, great for beginners or anyone new to tabletop roleplaying. 🌀 Surreal Adventures: Solve impossible mysteries, explore forbidden landmarks, and meet delightfully odd residents (who might also be you). 😱 Comedic Horror That Cares: Equal parts absurd comedy and gentle horror; think “cosmic dread, but make it cozy.” 🧠 Imagination Over Complexity: Focus on creativity and character moments, not endless rule charts or combat grids. 💜 Inclusive & Accessible: Welcoming to all players, with safety tools, clear tone guidance, and room for everyone to make the story their own. 🌞 You Already Live Here: It’s official. You’re part of Night Vale now. Relax. The sun is still out. Probably.

Character creation

Creating your character

Before our first adventure begins, we’ll create your Citizen together. You’ll start at Level 1, just beginning your strange and promising life in Night Vale. I’ll provide everything you need—books, guides, and any handouts—so you won’t need to bring or buy anything. We’ll handle character creation one-on-one before Session 0, so you’ll have time to explore your concept, ask questions, and get comfortable with the rules. Whether you want to play a local barista with a mysterious past, a scientist studying the glowing lights above Radon Canyon, or a perfectly normal resident who definitely isn’t part of a government experiment, we’ll find the right fit for you. After everyone has their character ready, we’ll hold a group Session 0 to bring the team together. During that session, we’ll establish how your Citizens know one another, set the tone for the campaign, and discuss boundaries and expectations so that everyone feels safe and included. All stats will be determined using the standard character creation process from the Citizens’ Guide—no homebrew rules or extra books are needed. Everything comes straight from the Welcome to Night Vale Roleplaying Game, and I’ll walk you through it step by step.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before you tune in to Night Vale, make sure your equipment is ready for broadcast: Create a Discord account: This is where we’ll chat, share updates, and post all the weird community announcements that mysteriously appear at 3 a.m. Create a Foundry VTT account: This will be our digital tabletop, complete with maps, tokens, and suspicious glowing lights. Check your broadcast gear! You’ll need a working microphone and headset. Think of it as your very own community radio setup—minus the eldritch interference. Probably. Need Support? If you need help with setup or have questions about character creation, the rules, or how to survive your first Librarian encounter, you can always reach me on Discord at zeldaharvestmoon. Once your signal is clear and your mic is hot, you’ll be ready to go live on air and dive into the mysteries of Night Vale. Stay tuned, Citizens!

What DM Rebecca brings to the table

I’ll be your Host, guiding you through the strange frequencies and shifting sands of Night Vale. With over a decade of professional storytelling experience, I specialize in creating immersive, character-driven adventures that feel like full broadcasts straight from the Community Radio booth. My games focus on narrative, atmosphere, and collaboration—not crunch or combat maps. You can expect rich descriptions, distinct character voices, eerie ambient soundscapes, and humor laced with cosmic unease. Every scene should feel alive, like something whispered over static late at night. I run official Welcome to Night Vale content and keep the tone equal parts absurd, heartfelt, and unsettling. Rules exist to serve the story, and the Rule of Cool reigns supreme. Above all, I bring a deep love of storytelling, a commitment to player agency, and the promise that no matter what happens, your choices will echo through the desert. You won’t just play in Night Vale—you’ll broadcast from it.

Safety

How DM Rebecca creates a safe table

Night Vale can be strange, eerie, and occasionally unsettling—but it should never be uncomfortable for the people at the table. My first priority as Host is making sure every player feels safe, respected, and heard throughout our shared story. Before play begins, we’ll hold a free Session 0 to discuss expectations, tone, and boundaries. We’ll review the Lines and Veils Code of Conduct together so everyone understands what’s welcome in our world and what’s off-limits. During play, I keep things relaxed and adaptable. If something ever feels off, you can pause, message me privately, or bring it up after the session. I’ll always adjust to ensure everyone’s comfort and enjoyment. After each game, I offer brief aftercare and debriefing, giving space to unwind, share highlights, or talk through any intense moments that arose during play. You can always reach me on Discord at zeldaharvestmoon for questions, concerns, or just to chat about your character’s next great conspiracy. Night Vale may be weird, but the table will always be welcoming.
