About me

Hi there! You can call me Stern, I'm an old Dungeons and Dragons player become DM. I started my journey with 3.5e and jumped straight into 5e when I decided to start hosting games for friends. I've been running a long-term, rule of cool, easygoing D&D game for close friends over Discord from 2020 up to the present. I've mostly run text based games in the past, using Discord for RP logs with each player having their own avatar to help easily ID themselves. I'm eager to break into voiced games, and so far things have been going well! I'm a big fan of Foundry VTT, and love using its lighting system and music to help makes the whole experience memorable. I personally think games should be fun, with the occasional dramatic moment for some tension. While I always prefer a little levity, I will always respect serious character moments. I do my best to 'yes and' player choices so long as they're within the realm of possibility. I encourage players to come to the table with: a backstory (something they won't mind touching on at some point in the game, this can and should include living friends or family members), short, medium and long term goals for the story, and a healthy appetite for hijinks! I believe that compelling stories are character driven, especially when it comes to any form of TTRPG. Characters and players are at the heart of what makes this sort of game so enjoyable, and their choices should shape how the story flows.

Character creation

Creating your character

1️⃣ After signing up for the game please join my Discord server. 2️⃣ Message me directly and we'll meet for a 30min call where we can discuss the campaign, determine Lines and Veils and brainstorm character concepts for the setting. 3️⃣ Character creation will be done together during a free session 0 with the entire group. Our aim is to make a cast of amiable characters who all work together as a team. If you join after session 0, we can meet to discuss character concepts that fit with the rest of the party and we'll work them into the story as smoothly as possible. We'll be using a Point Buy system, with a value of 32 points to distribute and a max of 16 in any one attribute before species modifiers (explained in Session 0.) Players will begin play with the usual starting gear choices for their class, with the addition of a healing potion.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Things you'll need: ✨Discord (free.) ✨Web Browser of your choice (free.) Needed equipment: ✨Laptop or Desktop Computer. ✨Microphone (good quality, with minimal background noise.) ✨Stable Internet connection. Players need: ✨A basic understanding of 5th Edition D&D. You don't need to be perfect, but please review some of the basics if you can. We can teach as we go, don't worry. ✨A willingness to roleplay. You won't be expected to put on a voice or speak in the 1st person as your character, just to be invested in your character and their story. ✨A desire to work together with others as part of a team. We're all working towards the same goal, ideally we should all get along without arguments at the table. ✨Knowledge of Virtual Tabletops. The entirety of the game will be hosted on Foundry virtual tabletop, but players aren't required to have any sort of license to use it. All Foundry VTT sessions are remote connect to host via a direct link which will be provided each game session. If you don't have any experience in Foundry VTT, I'll be happy to walk you through it on session 0 or in a call. We're starting slow at level 1, so you should have plenty of time to work through the controls.

What Stern brings to the table

✨A calm and safe atmosphere to explore character roleplay. ✨Teamwork oriented gameplay where everyone is encouraged to get in on the action. ✨A GM who is invested in the character choices and fitting them into the story as we go. ✨Vibrant maps with lightning effects, ambience, combat music and integrated combat automation to keep the action moving along smoothly. ✨Stories that art part of a broader narrative, with the possibility of linking into other modules or homebrew adventures in the future.

Safety

How Stern creates a safe table

✔️When we first meet, we'll be sure to go over Lines and Veils and discuss the themes of the story to make sure you're comfortable with everything going forward. ✔️Everyone will be expected to be courteous towards each other, respecting the Code of Conduct of StartPlaying.games. Players who are disrespectful towards others will be warned, and ultimately booted if they continue to harass other players. ❌There will be no PvP/theft/emotional abuse/discrimination between characters in our game, the players are a team that are expected to work together in our adventures. Arguments and discussion between characters are entirely normal, even friendly sparring matches, but we won't be doing PVP of any sort.
