About the adventure

Hi I'm Paul, I'll be your Game Master as you navigate the land of Shimigawa. Please feel free to PM me with any and all questions you have regarding this game. I prefer a player-first style to GMing and definitely support the rule-of-cool whenever possible - a sty;e which I think it perfect for Daggerheart. If you love worldbuilding, complex NPCs, feeling heroic, and having your decisions matter, I think we'll be a perfect match. The Shimigawa setting is loosely based concepts from Feudal Japan, China, and Korea, as well as sensational, fictional sources (mainly anime) such as: Ruroni Kenshin, Kung Fu Hustle, Naruto, Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, Avatar (Last Airbender/Korra), Samurai Shodown, Alchemy of Souls, and Blue Eye Samurai. The campaign starts as the country of Shimigawa (read: Fantasy Japan) is on the cusp of a civil war, in an age when firearms are being introduced and swordsmanship is slowly becoming less effective. The country is torn between the concepts of Tradition vs Modernization, Honour vs Efficacy, Individualism vs Collectivism, and Feudalism vs Democracy. The actions of the Players' Characters will be instrumental in tipping the balance between the 5 Factions warring for control of Shimigawa, and change the fate of the world. Or not. You (as a group) can decide to focus on the smaller side of life and deal with the day-to-day issues faced by the common folk as a result of the war. Backstory: Shimigawa has been experiencing peace for the past 50 years after almost two centuries of civil war. The previous Shogun, who united the nation under one banner died in his sleep months ago. Since then his son, has assumed the role, but the Emperor has refused to perform his sacred duty to confirm him as the new Shogun. There are many rumors and debates about why this is, but whatever the reason, it is clear that the differences in opinion between the various factions in Shimigawa are about to plunge the country to a civil war once again. Regardless of who wins in the end, it is certain that the common folk will be the ones to suffer in the interim. Each faction in Shimigawa has its own motivation and ideology. Your characters can agree or disagree with any of the stances taken by these factions - or even outright be a member of one. However, it is CRUCIAL that no matter the differences in opinion between the characters, the entire group must work together. The PLAYERS will have to find a way to communicate amongst themselves and negotiate any tricky or difficult situations that might arise from the CHARACTERS' opinions.

About me

Looking for an epic tabletop role-playing gaming experience? Look no further! Hi there, I'm Paul, and I've been playing TTRPGs for 21 years — 6 of which as a Game Master. I specialise in D&D 5th Edition, though I'm also open to other systems. No matter what you're looking for — tales of story and adventure or high-intensity combat — you can trust me to make sure that you get exactly the experience you desire. I take pleasure in adding depth and personalisation to my gaming sessions by tying in characters' backstories within quests. Your satisfaction will always be my top priority and I will work with you to ensure that each session exceeds your expectations!

Character creation

Creating your character

All Ancestries, Communities, and Standard Classes are available. However, certain options may not be available with all factions, and some factions may favour certain classes or communities. We can work together the find a good fit for whatever character concept you have in mind. Due to the nature of the setting, the following Playtest classes are also available: - Assassin - Brawler Players can create their characters on their own printed character sheet, or use a modifiable pdf (which I'll provide). You will need to work with the GM (we can arrange a Discord call before joining the game) to create your character to ensure that they fit the theme and feel of the campaign. If you like, you can PM me for more information on the Factions before you decide to sign up.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a decent headset, a Free roll20.net account, a Free Discord account, and a copy of the Daggerheart Rules (or the Free Daggerheart SRD). I've provided custom Ancestry, Community, and Domain cards on our Discord server.

What Paul Merlin brings to the table

The chance to live in a setting reminiscent of feudal-japan become the heroic (or heroic-adjacent) character you always wanted to be. I believe in a player-first mindset to GMing and tend to go with the Rule-of-Cool.

Homebrew rules

The Ancestries and Communities have been adjusted to better fit the setting, and I MIGHT change the rules for Group Actions but other than that I intend to play it close to Rules-as-Written.
