About the adventure
The legends are gone. Their songs still echo in taverns and their statues still stand in city squares, but every hero the realm once counted on fell in a single night. No one knows why. No one knows how. All anyone knows is that the League of Heroic Intent—the proud order that trained and sent them forth—is broken, understaffed, and desperate. That’s where you come in. Or rather, that’s where you’re dragged in. You’re not the chosen. You’re not the polished graduates of the League’s golden age. You’re the misfits they once turned away—the troublemakers, the ones with “too much baggage,” or the ones who just never got the call. But the world isn’t waiting for perfect heroes anymore. The monsters are moving, the wild magic is spreading, and someone has to pick up the banner. Unwanted Heroes is a DaggerHeart adventure for Level 1 characters, perfect for players new to the system or anyone who loves stories of flawed, unlikely adventurers finding their place. The tone is dangerous yet playful—expect heartfelt moments of connection, chaotic mission mishaps, and the occasional victory that’s messier than you’d like to admit. You’ll explore cursed ruins, unstable magic zones, and far-off wilds, all while uncovering the mystery of the fallen heroes and the threat that waits to finish the job. We’ll play through a mix of episodic missions and a connected overarching story. Each job starts with incomplete intel and questionable resources, forcing you to think creatively, improvise under pressure, and lean on each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Along the way, you’ll shape the League’s future, confront your own history, and maybe—just maybe—become the kind of hero the songs will remember. If you like fast-paced roleplay, cinematic action, and a table that values collaboration over competition, this game is for you. Whether you’ve been rolling dice for years or this is your first time stepping into an RPG, you’ll find a seat at the League’s battered old table… just don’t expect your first mission to go smoothly.

Creating your character
We’ll begin at Level 1, making this a perfect entry point for players new to DaggerHeart or those wanting to explore fresh characters. Character creation will take place during our Session Zero on August 21 at 6 p.m. PST, so you don’t need to arrive with a finished sheet—just ideas. During Session Zero, we’ll: • Choose your ancestry, community, and class from the official DaggerHeart options. • Answer creative prompts to weave your backstory into the League’s history and your party’s dynamic. • Explore why the League overlooked you the first time and what’s changed now. • Decide on any personal or party connections before the first mission. We’ll create characters in DemiPlane, which we’ll also use for sheets and rules reference. I’ll walk you through the process step-by-step, so no prior DaggerHeart experience is required. Pregenerated characters are available if you want to skip creation and jump right into play.
We’ll be building the party together during Session Zero, aiming for a balanced mix of roles so we can see all of DaggerHeart’s mechanics in action. The goal is to create a team that can handle combat, exploration, and roleplay challenges while giving every player their time in the spotlight. Whether you prefer heavy roleplay, tactical thinking, or creative problem-solving, there will be room for your style. No experience with DaggerHeart is required—just bring your ideas and be ready to collaborate.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Before we meet for Session Zero, please complete these steps so we can jump right into character creation and roleplay: 1. Create a free DemiPlane account – This is where we’ll build and manage characters, track rules, and share handouts. 2. Join the game’s Discord server – I’ll send the invite link after you sign up. This will be our main hub for voice/video chat, scheduling, and between-session updates. 3. Test your microphone and camera – Clear audio and video help keep the game flowing smoothly. 4. Review the DaggerHeart basics – I’ll provide a quickstart guide so you can get familiar with the core mechanics. No deep prep is required—just a glance to spark questions. 5. Think about your “Unwanted” backstory – Come with at least one idea for why the League rejected or overlooked you the first time. This can be funny, tragic, or mysterious. 6. Check your availability – We’ll be playing Session Zero on August 21 at 6 p.m. PST, then three weekly sessions after that. Everything else will happen at the table. If you’re new to virtual tabletops, I’ll walk you through using DemiPlane and Discord so you feel comfortable before our first mission.
What Sean Trew brings to the table
I run games that are prepared yet flexible—I come to each session with maps, story beats, and NPCs ready, but I love following the unexpected turns your choices bring. My goal is to make every session feel like a living, reactive world where your actions matter. At my table, you can expect: • Immersive roleplay with colorful NPC voices, distinct personalities, and shifting alliances. • Dynamic maps and visuals that bring each mission’s location to life. • Thematic music and ambient soundscapes to match tense battles, eerie ruins, or heartfelt campfire moments. • Balanced gameplay that blends roleplay, exploration, and fast-moving combat. • Rule of Cool moments where creativity and bold choices can trump strict mechanics—especially in chaotic missions. I also incorporate unique Unwanted Heroes elements to keep the game unpredictable and fun, including: • Unstable Magic Zones where spells can go wildly right… or very wrong. • Chaotic Job Board missions with incomplete intel and surprise complications. • Legacy Fragments that grant meaningful, temporary boons tied to the world’s lost heroes. Whether you’re a first-time DaggerHeart player or a veteran RPG storyteller, I’ll make sure you feel supported, engaged, and free to shape the story. We’ll laugh, we’ll improvise, and—just maybe—we’ll make a few legends worth singing about.
Homebrew rules
This campaign will primarily use the official DaggerHeart rules as written so that new players can learn the system as intended. Since it’s a brand-new system, I want to keep things close to the book at first so everyone can get comfortable with the core mechanics. That said, I will be experimenting with a few homebrew elements specific to the Unwanted Heroes campaign frame. These are things I’ve designed as Game Master to add flavor, keep the story unpredictable, and fit the tone of the world. While I prefer players to stick to the official rules so we have a stable foundation, I’m not opposed to considering player-created homebrew ideas—especially if they add to the fun and make sense in the story. We’ll just keep them within reason so they don’t unbalance the game.

How Sean Trew creates a safe table
Player comfort and enjoyment come first at my table. While Unwanted Heroes is a Mature game, it’s designed as a satirical take on classic fantasy adventures—not something that will push extreme boundaries. We’ll use our Session Zero on August 21 to set expectations, discuss tone, and give players a chance to share any topics they’d prefer to avoid entirely (Lines) or keep light/fade-to-black (Veils). You can message me directly with these at any point before or during the campaign—no public disclosure required. I’ll also encourage open communication during play. If something ever feels uncomfortable or distracting, just let me know and we’ll adjust immediately. Between sessions, we’ll take regular breaks to keep everyone fresh and engaged. At the end of the adventure, we’ll wrap with a Stars and Wishes discussion—celebrating moments we loved (Stars) and sharing what we’d like to see more of next time (Wishes). This helps ensure every player leaves the table feeling heard, supported, and excited for future games.
