About the adventure

Sworn to an ancient and secret society known as the Order of the Guardians you are dispatched to aid in the search for a missing scholar. Thus you attend a decadent Grand Masquerade — a great ball in the city of Port-à-Lucine in the decaying realm of Dementlieu. Beneath a glittering facade there is a greater danger than decadent aristocrats lurking in the shadows. An introduction to Dungeons and Dragons, this adventure is for beginning 1st-levels characters and will take 1 session. It is the first of a series of linked adventures in the Domains of Dread.

About me

Hello all, The name is Stuart. Thanks for considering me as your GM. I'm an obsessive Scottish geek and tabletop gamer, would-be writer and sometime-designer who lives in the medieval town of Worcester, England, though I don't not plan on making a habit of it. I've been tabletop gaming for 25 years or so, all sorts of systems including Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer Fantasy and Call of Cthulhu. I've even been published in Dungeon and Dragon magazine, back in the day when those were actually magazines, as well as having numerous adventures to my credit - you can check the list at https://videogamegeek.com/rpgdesigner/29806/stuart-kerrigan I've a passion for technology, communication, teaching and an overactive imagination that is always whirring in like a perpetual hamster wheel. This endeavour is one of several to feed said hamster.

Stuart was a great GM that a brought a ton of personality to the NPCs. Had a great time and will definitely book a game with him in the future

Stuart was very helpful and understanding with players new to warhammer fantasy.. His NPCs were also very animated and always entertaining to interact with. Creating a character and learning an unfamilar system was a cinch with his help.

Stuart is a great GM. Lots of fun to play his games and he throws in several well produced scenarios he wrote himself.

A great DM. Solid attention to detail, very welcoming. Makes sure each player has their time in the spotlight.

Character creation
Creating your character

Each player will generate a 1st-level character, using an elevated standard array of ability scores: 17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8. Please select from the “classic” races and classes of the Player’s Handbook, grounded in the tone and texture of a brooding, tragic world. Characters should feel like they belong in a tale of mist-choked crypts, ancient curses, and desperate hope. For example, a haunted elven paladin sworn to the Morninglord would be very appropriate; a cheerful tiefling monk with bubblegum aesthetics, less so. Aim for grit over glitter, dread over dazzle. Players are encouraged—but not required—to arrive with a full backstory. If you wish to weave a personal tale of sorrow, vengeance, or lost faith into your character’s origins, there will be space to explore those threads.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

To take part in this campaign, you’ll need a microphone—ideally one that provides clear, high-quality audio, so your voice carries through the mists without distortion. Being heard is essential; video, however, is not required. Please ensure you have Google Chrome installed on your computer. Foundry VTT runs best on Chrome, and other browsers may cause performance issues or glitches. While not essential, you may wish to keep a copy of the Player’s Handbook or the D&D 2024 ruleset close at hand. It can be helpful in those moments when candlelight fades and all that stands between you and the abyss is a rule well-remembered.

What Stuart brings to the table

I’ll be providing access to Foundry VTT for gameplay, and Syrinscape to conjure the soundscape—creaking timbers, distant howls, and the unsettling scrape of something moving just out of sight. You may experience an unnerving sense of being watched by a cat, or six. This presence is non-negotiable, inexplicable, and, in all likelihood, supernatural. Do not attempt to engage these ethereal entities of fur directly. Everything else you need shall unfold in time.

Homebrew rules

Orcs will be reimagined as Calibans—a human subspecies unique to the Demiplane of Dread in Ravenloft, shaped by corruption from malevolent supernatural forces at or before birth. Twisted by black magic, curses, or the lingering residue of vile acts, Calibans possess unnatural strength and endurance, but bear grotesque deformities and mental scars that render them outcasts in most societies. Think Quasimodo, or Chunk from The Goonies—misunderstood, malformed, but with hearts (and fists) of gold, or at the very least iron.

Safety
How Stuart creates a safe table

Ravenloft is unapologetically a horror setting—but the horror is meant to affect your characters, not you. Our goal is to ensure this remains a fun, engaging, and safe experience for everyone at the table. To support that, we’ll be using the Luxton Technique, which involves an open, respectful discussion before the game about any potential trauma triggers. This is done with the understanding that not all triggers can be anticipated, and that no one is expected to explain, justify, or disclose personal details about their boundaries.
