About the adventure
Beginners welcome! Anybody who's ever been curious about trying D&D but never had access, gather round. In this adventure, we'll start by going around the table, talking about what everybody is looking for in D&D, favorite genres of fiction, lines and veils. I will then guide you through making your first character, no purchases or extraneous sign-ups necessary. They'll get a roleplay opportunity to introduce themselves to the rest of the table. Everybody then teams up for a short adventure we'll make up on the spot - based on the genre interests we've already established at the table.

About me
A dungeon master for 14 years among friends, I started playing on a D20 system modified to run a Mass Effect game before getting into mainstream D&D. I followed the game from 3.5e through 4th edition and into 5th edition. Until it closed, I would volunteer to run beginner's sessions at Meltdown Comics. I'm a lifelong sci-fi, fantasy, and comic book geek. A deep well of pop culture knowledge. New players are my favorites - they can't be constrained by rules they don't know - but I've seen players I introduced to the game master the rules and reach 20th level. I like action and comedy, drama and intrigue, wonder and surprises. GMing is my favorite activity, I wish I could make money doing it - oh wait!

Creating your character
Creating characters will be part of the session, where I will direct you through a simplified version of the process. No need to sign up for any websites, I can provide a form fillable character sheet - which you may choose to print out. You will be making a first-level character using the 2024 ruleset. You do not need to own a copy of the Player's Handbook.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
At the very least, you will need a microphone and internet access to join the table. We can play via Google Meet, which can run on your web browser. Optionally, you can come to the table with a set of dice and print out your character sheet.
What John brings to the table
I will provide character sheets and character creation information straight from the newest Player's Handbook. Due to the improvised nature of this game, we will be playing in the theater of the mind instead of a tactical battle map. Expect a rules-light experience intended to remove as many barriers to the game as possible.
Homebrew rules
The rules may be simplified, but I aim to avoid homebrewing for this experience. You should be able to take this experience—or even your character—to another table in the future.

How John creates a safe table
Expect a link to a Lines and Veils doc where you can outline for me your limits in the game, though I do err on the side of a PG-13 rating. Aftercare also includes Stars and Wishes. It's a collaborative medium and feedback means everything.
