LEARN TO PLAY DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: Hold Back The Dead One-Shot
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | One-Shot
About the adventure
BEGINNER FRIENDLY - LGBTQIA+ FRIENDLY - NEURODIVERGENT FRIENDLY! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ Ironspine Keep is all that stands before a monstrous horde sent by the villainous lich Szass Tam. The heroes must defend a section of the fortress walls from encroaching monsters and internal spies, or the region will fall to Szass Tam’s tide of death! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ “Hold Back the Dead” is part of a yearlong celebration of Dungeons & Dragons and its 50th anniversary. The adventure is designed for four to six level 4 characters, and is a unique "tower defense" scenario suitable for players to either learn the basics of D&D *or* possibly trying out new classes/subclasses. You may make a 4th level 2024 D&D character of your own, or you can use a pregenerated character available for you to choose.

How to prepare
Discord requires a mic of some sort. To be able to use Roll20's maps feature you will need to access Roll20 through a browser (Chrome/Firefox preferred), be it on desktop, laptop or larger tablet (I don't recommend using a phone browser, it will be tiny). You will join my Discord and the Roll20 game prior to game start, and you will need to create Level 4 characters in D&D Beyond (using the browser extension Beyond20 for rolls to occur in Roll20). I do have some flexibility for those without desktop/laptop computer access in terms of screen-sharing the Roll20 tabletop in Discord and/or your ability to use the Beyond 20 browser app for your D&D Beyond character sheets. I am happy to work with beginners and neurodivergent players in whatever challenges they may have regarding playing with sufficient advance notice, either through text or voice chat in Discord.
What I provide
We will use D&D Beyond for character creation, Roll 20 for active gameplay/maps the day of, and Discord for voice chat during the game. Use of music during the game will be up to the players; I enjoy using it but I know it can be distracting to some. I do use Rules As Interpreted as a framework but love to use Rule of Cool for "big moments" in the game. You will receive a fun evening of combat and roleplay amongst yourselves as you learn (and/or play) Dungeons and Dragons! Please note that a phone may be sufficient to access Discord but you may need a computer to access the Roll20 maps. If you do not have access to a computer we will try to accommodate as best as possible.
Gameplay details
This one-shot will use a lines and veils form (similar to the Monte Cook checklist) to determine if there's anything that does need to be "lined or veiled". We will use verbal cues during the game to serve the function of X, N and O cards, and players have an open door to step away from the game as needed. At the end, we will discuss how everyone is feeling, and if anyone had stars or wishes related to the game itself.

How will character creation work
You will create your Level 4 D&D 2024 Players Handbook character prior to game start. We will try to coordinate party balance in my Discord prior to the game date. Depending on the number of players as we approach game day you may get a level increase to Level 5. Depending on how close to the game you join, you may be asked to use a pre-generated Level 4 character.
