About the adventure

The peaceful logging village of Westglen, nestled into the forested hills of western County Conto, has had it's veil of tranquility shattered. Wood cutters have vanished from their camps leaving only blood and webs behind. Villagers whisper in hushed tones of foggy nights when they can hear the voices of missing friends and loved ones, Captain Horva's guards tried to track the source only to be met with death and deer tracks. Rumors fly in the Laughing Doe taphouse, someone or some thing has moved into the ruins of Castle Andruvan and now silent dead scour the woods searching for... something. The woods of Westglen is an introductory sandbox adventure for 3-6 characters of 1-3 level. This module has been written to get players, new and old, back into the spirit of exploration based adventure. Explore the village of Westglen and get to know her citizens, make friends, or enemies, with the patrons of the Laughing Doe taphouse. Track down the sources of Westglen's troubles with clues and rumors. Gain fame, money, power, and several unique magical items as you work to save, or destroy, the village of Westglen. Before you play: Resources matter: can you carry all the treasure you just found, did you bring enough food, do you have enough ammunition, how much time are you willing to take searching this room? This module is balanced around everyone starting with 77 attribute points, no attribute starting higher than 17, max hit points at level one, and average hit points on level up. Expect to gain a level every two sessions. Expect the module to be completed in four to six sessions depending on how thorough your party is. Also, just because the game is listed as 18+ does not mean we will be discussing adult themes, I just don't have the energy to deal with teenagers.

About me

Playing and running dungeons and dragons since the early 90s. I've played OD&D, B/X, 2E, 3.5, 5E, Pathfinder 1E, Shadowrun 5E. I write adventure modules, fantasy fiction stories, and program video games as a hobby. I have a passion for old school mechanics and resource management, as well as deep immersion into the games world.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will, at a time of your choosing, join a discord call and fire up roll20. I will answer any questions you have about the world we are playing in and we will roll your character up. We will go over the backstory of the module and the backstory of your character and tie the two together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Things you need to bring: A roll20 account and discord account A good mic and area free of background noise is required, I have had a player in the past who have had no choice but to be on voice comms during a bingo night at an elderly care facility, never again. An idea/concept for a character that is an adventurer who wants to go on adventures.

What YourWalkerEx brings to the table

About Me: I bring everything you will need to play the game short of your character sheet; and that's not entirely true either, I do have a selection of premade character sheets you can use as well. I will provide each player with a quick start pamphlet containing a brief history of the local area as well as a list of house rules for the game. I run the games on Roll20 using discord for voice and video. Your character can be on either Roll20 or dndbyond thanks to the beyond20 plugin. The module we are playing, The woods of Westglen, is one that I have personally written and upon completion of the module each player will be sent a pdf copy for free. I have a small collection of ambient music for your enjoyment, as well as using hand drawn maps for the adventure. I do not play combat as sport, it is quick, viscous, and deadly; however I do use distance, surprise, and morale. You do not have to kill every enemy on the field of combat, if you can break their spirit the chance is good they will flee or surrender. The gameplay loop is simple, but fun: Meet people in town and collect rumors, venture into the wilderness to reach your destination while hopefully not getting lost or running into terrible things, explore the destination and try to solve the mystery of what is happening there, venture back into the wilderness and try to make it back to the safety of town.

Homebrew rules

Important House Rules: I use 10 minute dungeon exploration turns, you should know that. Flanking and attacks of opportunity are optional rules that are decided by the group. Short rests are 20 minutes (2 turns) instead of 60 minutes (6 turns) Long rests DO NOT completely refill your hit points. After completing a long rest you recover all of your hit dice. You may then roll hit dice as normal. Long rests CAN NOT be taken in a dungeon such as Castle Andruvan or Brathna's Tower.

Safety

How YourWalkerEx creates a safe table

I believe it is very important to have open and honest discussions with the players I am working with, before, during, and after the games. A strong introductory session/ session 0 to set the expectations of both myself as your game master, and you as my players. Breaks during the game after strong emotional moments to make sure everyone is doing okay and allow the group to process what just happened. Time together after the game to wind down, talk about what just happened, and come out of game mode.
