The Stygian Horizon (A Sandbox Alien Campaign)

The Stygian Horizon (A Sandbox Alien Campaign)

Alien: The Roleplaying Game, Homebrew Game | Campaign

About the adventure

Every job is a roll of the dice. You might be sent to retrieve valuable cargo from a drifting freighter, or secure a research lab that suddenly went dark. Sometimes it’s just pirates or rogue synthetics. But sometimes it’s something else... Something off the books, with claws, and no sense of mercy. Out here, it's hard to tell what’s more dangerous: the corporations, the creatures, or your own crew when they start to crack. The farther you drift into the void, the more you realize... Space isn't the only thing that wants to kill you. - In this bleak and unforgiving sandbox campaign setting, players step into the boots of mercenaries trying to make a fortune living on the fringes of known space. The frontier is a graveyard of failed colonies, derelict freighters, and half-finished research outposts, a silent testaments to humanity’s arrogance and ambition. Officially, you're in the “Space Salvage” business. Unofficially? You sometimes find yourself being an "off-the-books" cleanup crew for the galaxy’s worst nightmares. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation has a long reach and even longer list of secrets, and every abandoned hulk you board might hold something that was never meant to be found. The setting takes inspiration from Dead Space and Event Horizon... So expect a few extra added homebrewed elements into the Alien universe. As I run multiple sessions, the multiple games are all interconnected. So the events of one session might have the ripples of that event be felt by other games and vice versa. I'm planning on giving plenty of mission ideas to allow players plenty of options to choose from, but allow characters the autonomy to work towards their own goals. Want to start up a settlement, go for it! Wanna own your own starship? It'll take some hard work, but that's definitely on the table! If your looking for a sci-fi horror based game that allows you to work towards your own goals and emphasizes roleplay, this is your game!

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

West Marches

West Marches games are typically ran as “drop-in / drop-out” campaigns, where a pool of players hop into sessions as they are available or as sessions align with their schedules. These games focus on a player-led story and exploration, with each session acting as a self contained adventure, allowing for players to experience a variety of stories within an overarching campaign.

How to prepare

Just have a microphone that works loud and clear, and if you have a noisy background, please use Push to Talk just for the sake of others being able to communicate clearly... Almost everything else is referenced in the Foundry Compendiums.

What I provide

Besides the Discord and Foundry server we'll be playing on... - Plenty of NPC voices - A large library of music and sound effects (but not too overbearing to disrupt conversation or the flow of RP) - Very bespoke and details maps with weather effects and animated tokens. - A BUNCH of bespoke and custom made maps, I love creating new maps with a lot of the tools that I have, it's like playing with Legos, except I build the worlds we play in.

Gameplay details

I have an open door policy where if anything is bothering you about the game, feel free to come talk to me in private or shoot me a message and we can work things out. I tend to be very chill and flexible if I can accommodate my players with anything they need to make their gaming experience enjoyable as well as a welcomed addition to the game.

How will character creation work

As for when Character Creation happens, I can either meet before game to help you design one, or if you join with really short notice, I can have a pre-made set for you to jump right in and play for your first session, and later on you can make your character if you like what you experienced! There will be some house rules included on the Discord that will allow for even greater flexibility when designing your character, as well as new talents and items.
