About the adventure

Welcome to a new Vampire: The Masquerade experience where the night truly belongs to you. "Masquerade Unbound: An Open Chronicle" invites you to step into the gothic-punk world of the nineties, a pivotal decade in Kindred history, where ancient prophecies begin to unfold and the modern nights as we know them take shape. If you are a big fan of Vampire: The Masquerade lore, this game is for you. This is an entirely sandbox experience, where you will have full player agency from the beginning. During session 0 we will decide the kind of chronicle you want: Do you want the classic experience of personal horror in a gothic-punk world of a vampire struggling against the Beast while trying to save their dwindling humanity; or maybe the high-stakes political play of an Archon, a Justicar even, one more player in the eternal Kindred Jyhad. You can pick the specific time and location where we will start the chronicle if you want. We can even explore a specific plot line from the many there are in the metaplot. Then make your character. In this Chronicle you can create a character of any power level or age, from neonate to elder, or step into the shoes of your favorite canonical character from the lore. You create your Kindred—history, motivations, desires, and schemes—then set them loose upon the World of Darkness. You define what matters to your character, what drives them through the endless nights, and what goals they pursue in the labyrinthine society of the undead. As your Storyteller, I respond to your initiatives, bringing the world and its inhabitants to life around your character's ambitions. I maintain the setting, operate the supporting cast, and ensure that your actions have meaningful consequences in our shared narrative. In other words: play the Vampire game you always imagined. Whether you are an old fan or a new player wanting to experience a deep, focused, Vampire: The Masquerade game just for you. The night awaits. How will you spend your eternity?

Game style

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

How to prepare

Important consideration: Play-by-Post is slow, one week of play is equivalent to around a 3 hours live session. If you don't like writing and reading fiction, you are probably not going to like play-by-post gaming. You will need a Discord account. A roll20 account will be a good idea to keep a character sheet and use the virtual tabletop if we need to. This chronicle is ideally suited for players already familiar with Vampire: The Masquerade lore and mechanics. Your existing knowledge of clans, sects, and the rich tapestry of vampire politics will allow you to fully immerse yourself from day one. As Storyteller, I provide the setting, NPCs, and situations, but the direction and meaning of our chronicle are up to you. Your character's backstory, motivations, and actions actively shape the world around them. This chronicle requires characters who are proactive and players willing to seize initiative. The most rewarding experiences will come to those who actively pursue their character's goals, forge alliances, challenge rivals, and leave their mark on the World of Darkness. Passive characters will find the night passes them by.

What I provide

As your Storyteller, I own and have read all Vampire: The Masquerade books published prior to 5th Edition and I have played the game for more than 27 years. So you can trust that I know and am very familiar with masquerade lore, and that I always can make a quick consultation! Ensuring an authentic sandbox experience that honors the depth and complexity of the established lore while allowing for creative exploration. A true sandbox environment where your decisions shape the narrative. There are no predetermined paths, no rails guiding you - only a living, breathing World of Darkness responding to your character's ambitions, schemes, and desires. We will play over Discord and/or rolegate game. I also have Foundry and roll20 if needed. I will be checking the game multiple times per day Complete virtual tabletop with maps and character tokens if needed. Visual references for NPCs and important locations Digital tools for tracking resources and character states Thematic ambient music and sound effects for different scenarios and settings Experience facilitating emergent and non-linear narratives where your decisions have real and lasting impact Willingness to improvise in response to your unexpected actions, embracing the unpredictable Commitment to narrative depth and creative freedom Some custom rules optimized for the play-by-post format may be needed for smooth gameplay. I am open to requests for other play-by-post games (you can see all the games I have GMed over 29 years in my profile) or a different kind of chronicle for Vampire.

Gameplay details

We will use the first week as our session 0. During Session 0 we will talk about any specifics of the game, express and clarify safety tools and go through character creation. The game will be asynchronous, play-by-post. This format allows us to explore narrative depth while accommodating different schedules. I check for updates multiple times a day, and answer as soon as I see an update. From my experience you can expect around 4 to 6 answers daily.

How will character creation work

This is not a regular game, we will not be using the Character Creation rules unless: you want to create a starting character following the rules of the core book; or you want to create an advanced character following the rules for elders and such characters. Otherwise you can make exactly the character you want. You also have the option of picking any character from the lore of the game. In that case we will agree on the version you want to use (many characters have different character sheets), and agree on how we see/understand that character to make sure we are on the same page. And don't worry, it works! I have done it many times before.
