PBP - A Classy Goblin Romp

PBP - A Classy Goblin Romp

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

You're a lowly goblin, doing your best to survive against a pogrom against your people. After managing to beat off a set of commoners that were after your foraging party, you're found by a blue Dragonborn, who gives you the same choice they were given: Receive power and save your people, and perhaps, one day, you will be turned into a god that can affect true change for them. ~~~ Inspired by the Goblins comic by Ellipsis, this game places you in the shoes of a group of goblin or kobolds, that just want to live and survive after being branded evil by the human collective. In the comic they come across character sheets and choose class levels. Here, a deity gives you access to those first levels, and it's up to you to decide how to survive. Do you fortify the town? Do you set off on adventure in the world to gather magic items to save it? Do you become eloquent advocates and pacifists, defusing conflict where ever you go? Or do you choose to become warlords that overpower their aggressors and make them listen by force? The choice is yours. ~~~ Brighthallow is a homebrew setting I've been working on for years, with a technology level roughly in the range of victorian england to early 1900s. This game is set a few centuries before then, leaving you to make lasting impacts to the world as it is and becoming. Magic is common enough, artificers are viewed with weary suspicion akin to explosive alchemists, the world is filled with queer/LGBT people and depictions because I am, and so is my community. There is no homophobia/transphobia etc allowed nor present, and while specie-ism against kobolds and mild stereotyping between elves and dwarves is common enough, there's none of the ugly racism our regular world is plagued by. ~~~ Why Play by Post? You join the discord server, and don't have to worry about scheduling. Reply with your choices and actions as you have time, and I as the DM will respond accordingly. I'm very much glued to a screen of some sort, so expect a minimum of 2 to 4 responses in a day, excepting rest days (thursdays and mondays), with a ceiling between 10 and 20 responses in a day. You can get a lot of things done during that time, and no need to block off the same hours every week! Single character, single story. Want to be That Guy? Want to have the spotlight consistently? Don't want to wait for other players to finish their turn or respond? This is the way to go. You, your dice, and your DM.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

How to prepare

Character creation as outlined above. Let me know what themes you'd like to explore. Are you looking to be a religious leader to your flock? A warrior in charge of your tribe? An outcast fending for yourself? This will help me tailor the vibes and story to your character specifically.

What I provide

Using lots of assets from professional creators, gryphons saddlebag, czepeku, DG, SMR, laserllama, kibblestasty and a few others I'm sure to have forgotten here, as visual examples for scenes and setting. I do rule of cool/persuasion. If you can convince me something has even a chance of working, we'll roll for it and let the dice tell the story.

Gameplay details

We'll be going over tools, expectations and limits during session 0. Open Table, so any time you need a break, please take it. We move at your pace, exploring the themes and directions you wish to take. We'll be using the ELMO (enough let's move on) addition to x n o, messaged at all times.

How will character creation work

Start at level 2. Roll 4d6, drop lowest a total of 7 times, add them to your scores as you desire, dropping one of the 7. No score above 18 at character creation, so you can have something to increase in the future. Take one free feat and one free tool proficiency at game start. You do not need to play a priest or warlock! There are multiple ways to solve each quest. Multiclassing is allowed :) All Kibblestasty, Laserllama and Somanyrobots content is good to go without needing to check in with me, if there's other homebrew content you'd like to use, reach out and we'll talk about it! All normal and many monstrous races are fair play. Orcs, Bugbears, Goblins are known mercenaries cultures and will on occasion face some distrust, otherwise things are equitable. All official options are a Go, yes, including That Spell. Enemies will adapt to your tactics and learn, so you won't be able to coast on it by itself. Please come to session 0 with some basic idea of a character concept, and we'll talk some motivations and other questions to help you flesh out your character. Looking forward to talking to you!
