About the adventure

Set in the Misty land of Barovia, the characters become trapped within a gothic horror environment ruled over by the Dreaded Countess Strahdnaya von Zarovich. Barovia is a land of death and decay, the nature fades and spirit are restless. To those who live here it is an oppressive existence fraught with danger. To those who come from outside Barovia, it is a dark prison that few have ever left. Your characters, have themselves become trapped here and will need to fight for their lives if they want to escape this dangerous land. Your characters lives are at risk constantly, with death almost always a possibility. But in a Land like Barovia, there are ways for those to return from death, changed. This is a modified Version of the Curse of Strahd Campaign, Mainly changing the gender of the Titular antagonist along with several changes to the Lore, Land and People of Barovia. Along with some Additions from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, Fair Barovia, the Curse of Strahd Adventurers League Modules and Custom Expansions on material Present in the module. The game should run from Levels 1 to 13. Curse of Strahdanya is a Gothic Horror campaign and tackles some darker content and themes. I have attempted to include the topics I believe may arise in the Content Warnings section.

About me

Hello. My name is Paul and I've been a Dungeon Master for Dungeons & Dragons for nearly 10 years, I have a lot of Experience running 5th edition having completely many Long Form campaigns and one-shots, with a deep love for taking Official Modules and making them my own, expanding them and co-operating with players to make their experiences unique and tailored to the module/campaign. In addition to 5e (2014 and 2024), I've taken attempts into other TTRPGs like Vampire the Masquerade (V20 and V5), LANCER, and D&D 4e. Additionally I have been running online games consistently for over 6 years, I use Roll20 to run my campaigns and Discord to help organize and communicate with my Players.

Character creation

Creating your character

I want to run this Campaign using the 2024 Player's Handbook version of the Rules for D&D 5e. The game will be a mix of Exploring the Land of Barovia, Social Roleplay with a lot of the NPCs within this land and Combat against the dark forces the serve Strahdanya. Your characters will be starting at 1st level using the 2024 version of the PHB classes, 2014 subclasses are allowed but you should use the 2024 content where available. Artificers from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are also allowed. Characters can be made with Standard Array or Point Buy systems for stat generation. Allowed Species: -Any Species from the 2024 Players Handbook -Any Species from Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse -Any Lineage from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Any spells from additional 1st party or 3rd party materials outside the Players Handbook are by default not allowed, but may be reconsidered upon direct request.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need: - A Microphone, - A Discord account for Communication, - A Roll20 account for Character Sheets and for Combat. Discord and Roll20 accounts are free, so there's no need to worry if you don't have one currently, signing up is quick and won't cost you anything. Outside your Microphones and Accounts, I require players to be respectful to each other and to myself.

What Paul C brings to the table

I provide the Roll20 game with a Plus subscription that allows me to share some content for Character Creation. I provide a Discord server for players of this game to facilitate the Voice Chat of the Game along with any private communications amongst players. I have an Open Message policy along with a There Are No Stupid Questions Policy, so if you have a question about roleplay or mechanics that you are unsure of you can ask me during the session or between sessions and I will endeavor to provide a swift answer. I will provide ambient music to the group during sessions, and appropriate combat music for more intense battles and moments.

Homebrew rules

Between Sessions if you write a Journal Entry that includes your characters thoughts, then I give out an extra use of Heroic Inspiration.

Safety

How Paul C creates a safe table

Session 0 will be used for Character Creation and to help determine the Hard Lines for the Table that won't be crossed. If you are uncomfortable declaring your Hard Lines publicly you may send them to me directly and privately and I will include it without mentioning who sent me the message. For information on what content may be in the game before we begin see the Content Warnings, I have tried to be as thorough as possible with detailing the potential themes and occurrences of this adventure. I run sessions that last approximately 4 hours, so I take breaks at an appropriate mid-point to have a moment to decrease tension and relieve any built up stress from high conflict moments.
