Candela Obscura | Beginners Welcome
Candela Obscura | Campaign
About the adventure
Step into the gaslit streets of Newfaire, where the veil between reality and the unnatural is dangerously thin. In this game of Candela Obscura, you will play as members of a Circle, a team of investigators sworn to confront and contain supernatural horrors. Bound by duty, curiosity, or desperation, your Circle will unravel eerie mysteries, navigate secret societies, and face entities that defy understanding. This is a game of strange rituals, desperate gambits, and the creeping corruption of the unknown. As a Circle, you will stand together against the unnatural, but every discovery comes at a cost. Will you protect the city from the horrors lurking in its shadows, or will you fall to the forces you seek to understand? The choice is yours if you dare to take the case.
Game style
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.
For players interested in trying out Candela Obscura. This will be a game for beginners (I am fairly new to this system myself), and will be a short-run campaign. Gameplay will lean heavily on roleplay and theater of the mind.

How to prepare
You will need a Discord and a Roll20 account for this game. You will also need a microphone. Webcams are highly encouraged but not required.
What I provide
I use the Roll20 VTT and will bring all necessary materials and rulesets via Roll20 content share. Character sheets will be built on Roll20 and battle maps will be hosted there as well when necessary (I intend to use theater of the mind, for the most part). I also utilize ambient music and sound effects. While I'm not the most skilled at it, I love to use character voices. Due to the relatively loose mechanics of Candela Obscura, I want to lean into the rule of cool, roleplay, and theater of the mind storytelling.
Gameplay details
A link to the Monte Cooke consent checklist will be provided after you join. Lines and veils will be established during session zero. X, N, and O cards are typically sent to the GM privately, but every group is different and we will establish group expectations in session zero.
