Dread Metrol: Into the Mists

Dread Metrol: Into the Mists

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

In the year 994 YK, the Nation of Cyre was plunged into a Magical Cataclysm. Cyre is now a blasted wasteland called "The Mournland". Nothing grows there, none can survive there except for Warforged flocking to the Lord of Blades, and the Magical Horrors born of the Mourning. The Capital, Metrol, is lost beyond the mists. Your party, treasure hunters exploring the wastes, will begin the adventure in Metrol -you have lost your way and are now trapped among the lost in the besieged city. Four years have passed, but have not passed. You are now trapped in a place beyond hope, beyond reason, beyond mercy. You are in Dread Metrol

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

How to prepare

You will need access to Roll20. If you aren't on DNDBeyond, we can work something out, but Roll20 is my preferred VTT.

What I provide

I will bring a huge pile of tokens, atmospheric music, all the core rulebooks for Fifth Edition, along with all the supplements one would need to run both Eberron and Ravenloft in Fifth Edition.

Gameplay details

When you sign up, I'll send you a survey. Please understand this game might get very brutal and unpleasant. I'll do my best to not go into gory details. Eberron's Lead Designer Keith Baker described the Mournland as "a giant Dungeon". Players can expect survival horror mechanics and dungeon crawling, with hazards around every corner. All the while, you will evade the monsters born of the tragedy, the undead harvested from the victims, and one dragon who soars over the city where magic once came to life. That being said, I'm of course willing to negotiate the level of detail that goes into descriptions of combat. I want to put your characters into dangerous situations where survival is satisfying, but I don't want to gross you out for the sake of it. Hawkeye: War isn’t Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse. Father Mulcahy: How do you figure that, Hawkeye? Hawkeye: Easy, Father. Tell me, who goes to Hell? Father Mulcahy: Sinners, I believe. Hawkeye: Exactly. There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chock full of them — little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander.

How will character creation work

This game is set in 998 YK, the year most Eberron Games begin. Your characters will start at Third Level, and may use point buy to build your characters. Playable Species: Humans -Found all over the World. Elves -Wood Elves are the Tairnadal, a Proud Warrior Race. High Elves are Aerenal, who practice Necromancy. Half-Elves -Khoravar are a race born to the continent of Khorvaire and are not seen as odd. Dragonborn -they are not common, but I'll permit them. Dwarves Gnomes Halflings Half-Orcs -Jorghuntal are "Children of Two Bloods", and are not seen as odd. Kalashtar -The first race designed by Keith Baker for the setting! Psionics who have two souls! Warforged -My favorite little guys! Sentient Constructs! Shifters -A misunderstood and diverse group of people descended from Lycanthropes. Changelings -A people who must hide themselves... and do it well, as they are descended from Doppelgangers. Genasi -People altered by proximity to a Manifest Zone. Orcs of Eberron -Because "Monstrous Races" are cool and a big part of Eberron, so we also allow... Hobgoblins Goblins Bugbears Goliaths Eberron-specific species (Warforged, Kalashtar, Changeling, and Shifter) are encouraged. The Class of Artificer is encouraged, as it was first created FOR Eberron in 3rd Edition. We will use Homebrew Artificer Rules to enhance the experience. The Blood Hunter Class is permitted, but your PC's origin must be discussed with me, first, as they're a bit irregular for the setting.
