02a Refugees Refused (2-3 hour)

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | One-Shot

About the adventure

2 Objectives - 2-3 Hour Duration Based on DDAL 09-02 Stopped at the Gate v1 - 2-3 hours ($20) It’s been a long, dangerous, and arduous trip, but you’re finally here—Baldur’s Gate. You’re not out of peril yet, however, even if you’re leaving the lawless wilds behind you, the streets of the Gate run red with blood. And you quickly find that arriving in the city wasn’t the biggest challenge. Now you must convince the city’s rulers to grant asylum to you and the refugees in your charge. This adventure is optimized for three to five 1st- to 4th level characters and is optimized for five characters with an average party level of 3. NEW PLAYERS TO THIS SERIES: If you are joining this adventure series in this second episode (which is totally fine), please prepare a 4th level character sheet or let me know if you need help creating one or would prefer a 4th level pre-gen character. RETURNING PLAYERS: If you participated in the 1st episode "Almost Gone to Hell" a few weeks ago, you are invited to continue in this 2nd episode with your existing character from episode 1, leveled up to 4th level. This adventure occurs in the city of Baldur’s Gate, located on the Sword Coast of Faerûn in the Forgotten Realms.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Recruiting notes

The city of Elturel in Faerun, once guarded against the undead by a unique "second sun" has been torn from the face of Toril and cast into Avernus, the first level of hell! And while your party bravely gathers refugees from the area around the crater where the once great city stood and begins escorting them to Baldur's Gate, murder and deviltry mar the caravan's progress. Will you survive the journey to Baldur's Gate? Can you convince the crowded and troubled city to grant you and the refugees access? Is the city itself safe from the dangers that swarm around the survivors? Join us today at 1500 PDT and add your swords and spell books to this brave battle against foul fiendish foes!!

How to prepare

FIRST SESSION: Be prepared to discuss what you like and don't like, what you're looking forward to, any "Must haves", "Must not haves", your player character preferences, and any questions you have for me as DM or your fellow players. SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS: a) Review the notes from the previous session, b) prepare any questions you want to cover before we begin play, c) have your character sheet as ready to play as you can (leveled up, spells up to date), d) remember virtual or real dice, e) grab a snack and a drink or two.

What I provide

As your GM, my primary goal is to make sure everyone has a great time, including me! I recognize that every group is different and that the preferences of each group also vary. That's why we'll spend plenty of time in our Session Zero making sure I understand the group's likes and dislikes, preferences and boundaries, and what they are looking for from the adventure. This campaign is based on a story I originated and have been developing for the last five years. I've already run it with two independent groups who ran it to completely different conclusions. I'm sure your group will put their own spin on it as well. THE BASICS VIRTUAL/REMOTE: I use D&D Beyond and grant all player characters assigned to my campaign full access to all relevant materials. I also provide custom story content, original (my own) and AI-generated NPC, location, and item illustrations, and lots and lots of detailed big and small maps, as well as PDF post-game session notes for every episode. Video recordings may be available if the group is open to it. IN PERSON (Puget Sound area only): For those of us lucky enough to play together in person, I also provide battle maps, a huge collection of minis from which to draw, an awe-inspiring selection of dice (if you forgot your own), memorable handouts, eye-popping props, and other additional features which are negotiable based on party/group preferences (music, lighting, etc.). NPC VOICES I love doing a wide range of compelling NPC voices and sound effects, but if you happen to be a group that prefers that I don't do that, I'm OK either way. Just let me know what you prefer.
