Waterdeep: The Infernal Inheritance

Waterdeep: The Infernal Inheritance

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Welcome to Waterdeep: The Cassalanter Conspiracy, a thrilling adventure set in one of my favorite cities in the Forgotten Realms. This game is perfect for both new and experienced players, making it an excellent first step into the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Whether you’re a budding adventurer or a seasoned hero, Waterdeep offers endless opportunities—but also great dangers lurking beneath its gilded surface. Set in the sprawling metropolis of Waterdeep, you’ll navigate a world of political intrigue, hidden plots, and shadowy organizations, all while carving out your own path. With fortune and power on the line, will you outmaneuver rival factions, uncover hidden secrets, and claim a treasure hoard beyond your wildest dreams? Or will you find yourself entangled in the sinister machinations of Waterdeep’s nobility—particularly the Cassalanter family, whose wealth and charm may hide something far more nefarious? Gameplay will be turn-based combat hosted in Roll20, with dynamic and engaging encounters that reward creative thinking and tactical play. The world will react to your choices, and there will be plenty of downtime between adventures—both in and out of sessions—to develop your character’s story, form alliances, and shape your journey. I use milestone leveling rather than XP because story progression is my priority; after all, uncovering a conspiracy that could shake Waterdeep to its core should be more rewarding than simply cutting down a hundred goblins. If you're looking for an adventure filled with intrigue, danger, and a chance to leave your mark on one of the most iconic cities in D&D, then this is the game for you. Join me at the table, and let’s tell an unforgettable story together!

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Combat Heavy

“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

Rules as Written (RaW)

Games that are ran “Rules as Written” emphasize realism and stick to the letter of the rules, allowing players to explore creative solutions while still operating under a consistent rule set. Players have the ability to utilize the rules in creative ways to create awesome characters and moments in the game.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

How to prepare

Discord: You’ll need a Discord account to communicate during the sessions. Voice chat will be used during the game. Working Mic: A mic is essential for roleplaying and participating in the game, so make sure you have one that works properly. Roll20 Account: Since we’ll be using Roll20 for gameplay, you’ll need a Roll20 account to access the game and create your character. Character Idea: Please come with a basic character idea in mind. If you're unsure or need help fleshing out your character, I’m happy to assist you! Reading the basic rules ahead of time (Player's Handbook, etc.) is encouraged but not required. I’ll guide you through the game mechanics as needed, so don’t worry if you're new to D&D!

What I provide

I will be hosting the game on Roll20, with carefully selected maps tailored to each scenario, ensuring immersive environments for exploration, combat, and key story moments. I also love making random encounters feel engaging and dynamic, using a wide range of resources to enhance the setting and player enjoyment. To deepen immersion, I curate music and ambient sounds—from atmospheric city streets to tense battle themes, with special selections for boss fights to make those moments even more intense. While I’m not a professional voice actor, I enjoy using character voices to bring NPCs to life, fully immersing myself in the world and having fun with roleplay. When it comes to rules, I follow them as a guideline rather than a strict set of limitations. I believe in keeping the game flowing and fun, so I make adjustments when needed—for example, allowing healing potions to be used as a bonus action. My goal is to strike a balance between engaging tactical combat, rewarding creative problem-solving, and rich storytelling, making sure every session is an exciting and memorable experience!

Gameplay details

This game is an open and welcoming space where no one is judged. My goal is to create a fun and immersive experience for everyone, and player comfort is a top priority. If you ever have any concerns during the session, my DMs will be open for private messages. I encourage players to reach out at any time if something doesn’t sit right or if adjustments need to be made. I will also check in with players after each session to make sure everyone is enjoying the game and to address any feedback or concerns. This is a collaborative story, and I want to ensure it remains an engaging and safe space for all involved.

How will character creation work

Character creation will take place before the first session to ensure everyone is ready to dive into the adventure. We will be using Roll20 for stat rolling, and I’ll provide a macro for rolling ability scores: Ability Score Rolling Macro: &{template:default} {{name= Ability Scores}} {{[[4d6kh3]][[4d6kh3]][[4d6kh3]][[4d6kh3]][[4d6kh3]][[4d6kh3]]}} Each player will roll their stats with this macro and can re-roll one score if they’re not happy with their results. The starting level for characters will be Level 1. I ask that characters be created using races and classes from official D&D sources. If you really want to play something outside of the standard rules, please run it by me, and I’ll review it to see if it fits the campaign. Feel free to refer to official D&D books, such as the Player’s Handbook or other WotC-approved content. Once your character is ready, we’ll dive right into the game, and you’ll be fully prepared to start your adventure in Waterdeep!
