About the adventure

This game is welcome to people of all backgrounds, genders and orientations. If you have any issues with inclusivity, this may not be the game for you! Beginners and Veterans alike are welcome, and I'm happy to help you build your characters! Welcome to Humblewood! Something is deeply wrong in the Wood. The ancient Scorched Grove—an ashen wasteland scarred by elemental fire—has begun to expand, bringing drought, crop failures, forest fires, and aggressive emberbat swarms. As homes are destroyed, displaced folk increasingly turn to banditry to survive. Unknown to most, a corvum necromancer has awakened a dormant Aspect of Fire beneath the Grove. Its growing power is spreading flame and empowering fire-born creatures throughout Humblewood. Soon, the elemental incarnation will break free—and unless it can be stopped, the entire Wood may be reduced to ashes.

About me

I'm a DM with nearly 30 years of experience and have been a Professional running multiple sessions weekly since 2021. I've been playing since 2nd Edition and I strongly believe that the player's write the story with their choices and decisions, I'm just the editor that makes sure every player is getting the role they want in the story. While I sometimes may be using published materials, I'll often tailor the module to the players. This means that your choices in character creation will help shape the story, and veterans who may have played the adventure before might get a surprise or two! I believe in RAW and RAI, meaning your spells and abilities will do what they say they do, but I also support and encourage creative applications as well. I won't punish you for your build or your creativity, instead I'll find ways to make you feel challenged and awesome! I'm a fan of rich, fulfilling narratives, memorable characters with unique personalities and stories that will change based on your decisions, but I'm also a seasoned vet who's fought a battle or two and loves dynamic tactical combat. Depending on who is in the group and what your preference is, we can focus on either (or both!). We can play a session without a single roll of a die, or we can wage glorious battle through a gauntlet of cunning foes. The game you want is the game I'll bring to you!

Character creation

Creating your character

Level 6. Standard Array. 2024 5.5E Classes and Backgrounds. Created in D&D Beyond using the Humblewood Rules from Hit Point Press.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Have a discord account, a webbrowser, a D&D beyond account (optional), a Forge account, a microphone and a character concept (I can help!) and a friendly attitude! I will offer access to the full D&D Beyond catalogue, as well as access to a Foundry Server.

What Northern Dungeons brings to the table

Full colour maps on Foundry VTT with dynamic lighting and other fun effects! Ambient music for Combat, Exploring or Socializing! Character voices, a rich cast of NPCs and opportunities to develop relationships that are full and rewarding! Dynamic and Challenging Combat that can surprise the Meta and presents stakes! Narratives tailored to the Player Characters, making the stories personal and meaningful!

Homebrew rules

I defer to ability checks over Item HP, favouring Strength for breaking, jumping and swimming, I encourage using the 2014 combat option rules in the DMG, with some space utilizing the 2024 Unarmed Strike Rules and thew saving throw mechanics. I utilize Exhaustion, and add it to the statuses Lesser Restoration can heal, and allow Second Wind, Rage, Wholeness of Body and other Physical Based abilities as a means of overcoming it. I use the Free Press mental health conditions as well, along with 2014 madness rules (sometimes with durations homebrewed) I like to use Popcorn initiative for exploration and skill challenges when there is an urgency or danger that opens up space for cinematic descriptions and allows equal opportunities for the spotlight.
