Blade Runner: The Roleplaying Game | Campaign

About the adventure

This campaign will introduce new players to the game rules and setting of the Blade Runner RPG. This case file will explore the meaning of memories and will force your characters to face physical, mental, and moral challenges. In this adventure, your characters are members of the LAPD Rep-Detect Unit. As a Blade Runner, you're expected to follow orders, but the best of you know that sometimes you have to bend or even break the rules to find justice. Your Blade Runner will have to contend with the dark, rain soaked, neon-lit streets of Los Angeles in the year 2037; where violence and mistrust lurk around every corner. How far will you go in the pursuit of justice? Will you keep to the word of the law, despite its failings, or will you flaunt the rules to achieve results? In this adventure, you are the protagonists of the story and your decisions will shape the world around you. Good Luck Blade Runner, you're gonna need it.

Game style

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Additional details

How to prepare

A character concept and backstory (These should be open to adjustment to suit the group's needs and goals). Or have decided you wish to play one of the available pre-generated characters. A Roll20 account. A Discord account. A microphone for voice chat on Discord. A webcam for video on Discord.

What I provide

A Discord server will be provided to players that sign up for this campaign. The server will have resources to help you with character creation. A Roll20 game will be set up for the campaign. This virtual tabletop will be home to player's character sheets, battle maps, custom tokens and handouts. As a DM, I like to focus on a cinematic style experience, making use of art for NPCs, locations and items, and music. I use Kenku FM for my music and ambient sounds, which is a Discord bot that allows players to alter the volume of tracks, so if music is something you find distracting, you are free and welcome to turn it down or mute it entirely. I like a mixture of complex character narratives and good Ol' fashion fighting bad guys. Sessions will be a mixture of roleplay heavy scenes and cinematic tactical combat. Depending on the session, your character might find themselves in multiple combats in the one session or spending an entire session roleplaying with other players and NPCs. When it comes to character voices I'm no voice actor, but what I lack in unique voices I make up for with descriptions of NPC mannerisms and art to immerse my players. I strongly believe that role-playing games are where we come together to have fun, and I aim always to allow my players to use their creativity and imaginations to overcome the challenges they face. While the rules of a system do matter and I enjoy the more mechanical elements of TTRPGs, I believe in bending said rules in the service of the story and our groups enjoyment of the game.

Gameplay details

I will cover our games safety tools in our session 0. Players are encouraged to message me during or after game sessions to discuss any content they do not enjoy, so we can ensure you feel safe at our game table. Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist will be kept in an anonymous document that will be available to all players online. This will allow all players and the DM to see what type of content will and will not be present in our game sessions. Stars and Wishes will be collected at the end of each session. These will be used to tailor future sessions to focus on the content the players enjoy and want to see more of.

How will character creation work

Players can either create their own character or play as a pre-generated character. All the characters in this adventure must Blade Runners of the LAPD's REP-Detect Unit. Players who wish to make their own character are encouraged to message me about character ideas before our group's session 0. We can spit ball ideas and discuss what type of character you hope to play.During session 0, we will discuss our group's characters and their relationships with each other. Player's with non pre-generated characters should come to the session 0 with a character concept and be open to making changes based on the group's needs and goals. Any players that join after will be guided through the existing groups characters and together we can find a way of incorporating your character into the group's story.
