Dragon Heist
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
What starts as a simple request from the scholar Volo will quickly turn into a power struggle across the free city of Waterdeep, as you uncover a villainous plot or five - and find that some of the most influential people in the city are either players, or pawns, in a Great Game afoot under the noses of the Lords of Waterdeep. A grand urban caper and a series of heists await your band of sellswords. And to the victor goes the princely spoils: a treasure worth at least half a million gold coins! So come, adventurers, fresh to the game or veterans alike, and join the great game. See if you can outwit them all, and commit the great Dragon Heist!
Game style
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.
Dungeon Crawl
A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
A game of D&D for beginners, using the classic module as remixed by Justin Alexander, webmaster of The Alexandrian and author of So You Want To Be A Gamemaster! Our party currently has an Orcish Artificer, an Elven Paladin, a Dragonborn Ranger, and a Tiefling Rogue. I will be happy to walk you through character creation and picking up the rules. Please do not use ChatGPT or similar generative AI programs to create a character: they do not and cannot know the rules and will cheerfully suggest characters that do not work.

How to prepare
Please have a microphone and a computer with a screen large enough to handle Roll20. We will be using a dedicated Discord server to handle voice; video will not be required.
What I provide
I will bring maps, rules, Roll20 modules, and hope to be able to get illustrations of your characters post-game.
Gameplay details
Expect a flexible and improvisational style, a mix of theatre of the mind and battlemaps, a mix of drama and humor, and a grand time in Waterdeep. I'm not an expert on the Forgotten Realms, but I have been running games for over 20 years, and people have been having fun with them!
