About the adventure

A shadow has fallen on the sands of Ægypt. Deep within a long-forgotten tomb, an ancient evil rouses itself from a thousand-year slumber. Oracles in many lands foretell doom—soothsayers are plagued by visions of a great serpent wrapped around the world, its fangs dripping with venom. You and your party have been chosen to find the cause of these black tidings. Many dangers lurk along your path. The desert is deadly to those unprepared for its perils. Spies of the enemy may be hiding anywhere. But all of this pales in comparison to what awaits you at the end of your journey: the vast necropolis, once a sanctified place of burial, now a hive of demons and undead. You will need all your strength, all your wits, all your magic . . . or vaults prepared for pharaohs and priests may become your tomb as well. Necropolis, written by Gary Gygax, was first published in 1992 for the now-defunct Dangerous Journeys RPG. Now in Pathfinder 2e, come experience the greatest dungeon ever created by the original Dungeon Master. Enter the necropolis, and meet your destiny . . . or your doom.

About me

👋 Hi! I’m Gary. 🧙‍♂️ You came here looking for a gamemaster—one who will make sure you have a great time. Give me a try. My #1 priority as a GM is to make sure everyone at the table has fun. 🛠️ I have spent more than 40 years gamemastering, worldbuilding, and roleplaying. I have the experience to deal with every situation, to know what works and what doesn't. 📕 I’m a professionally published fiction author, and my fantasy fiction has earned a handful of accolades. Tabletop roleplaying games have been my real passion, though, ever since I got the Red Box for Christmas when I was 10 years old. In the 40 years since, I’ve run dozens of different game systems for everyone from tweens to senior citizens, for beginners and veteran gamers alike. 🌐 Like many of us, I’ve garnered hundreds of hours of experience running games online since 2020. But running games over the internet wasn’t new to me. I’ve been doing it since the 1990s, when I used Delphi chat rooms. 🪄 When you play in one of my games, you’ll have the freedom to use your imagination. I love saying, “Yes, you can do that.” I never want to get in the way of player creativity. 🌟 I work hard to make sure my players have an experience they can’t get anywhere else. Whether I’m running an offbeat game full of eccentric characters or an intense campaign full of heroics and sacrifice, you can count on me to help you create an original, unique story. ⌨️ If you want a low-bandwidth game or a no-voice game—because of technology limitations, hearing or speech impairment, or just because that’s what you like—I will be happy to set one up for you. ✨ What are you waiting for? Let’s go on an adventure—book a game with me. I can’t wait to create great things together. ✨

Character creation

Creating your character

This is a high-level campaign—the party is currently level 15, and will reach level 20 before the climax. If you need help, I'm happy to schedule a time to meet one-on-one with you online if you need help. We'll be using the remastered Pathfinder 2e rules for this game. Most legacy content will also be allowed. If you don't know the Pathfinder rules, that's fine too. Character creation guidelines will be on the campaign's Obsidian Portal page, and you'll be given a link when you book. You can build your character in Pathbuilder and import into the VTT, or you can create directly in the VTT. I can help you with getting your character into the VTT no matter how you build it. Unlike most adaptations of Necropolis, I am retaining Gygax's original setting: the world of Ærth. This unique setting will add flavor to the game, but it will slightly limit some character creation options (mostly Ancestries).

The current party

The party has multiple beginners, so don't be afraid to sign up if you aren't a Pathfinder guru. Our defining goal is first and foremost to have fun. We're not stodgy, we're not rules lawyers, and we don't take ourselves too seriously. Current party composition is a cleric, a barbarian, and a rogue—a wide variety of roles are still available! The party has driven the minions of Set out of Artuat, a small village in middle Ægypt near the necropolis they seek, and then confronted the massed forces of evil on the high desert plains and routed them. They now proceed to the necropolis. It's still early in the campaign, so sign up today and join us!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

• You'll need free accounts at both Discord and The Forge (forge-vtt.com). If you need help setting those up, message me. • You'll need some way to participate in voice chat on Discord—a headset mic would be perfect. • We won't be using webcams. • You'll need a desktop or laptop computer to access the game on Foundry. The only software you'll need is whatever web browser you prefer.

What Call Me Gary brings to the table

• The remastered core books for Pathfinder 2e (plus some other books). If we need a book I don't have, I'll get it. • A version of Necropolis converted by myself to PF2 rules. I own all three published versions of Necropolis—the original from Dangerous Journeys, the D&D 3e adaptation, and the Swords & Wizardry adaptation, and I consulted all three when developing this adventure. • Servers for both Discord and Foundry. You'll be given instructions on how to join both when you book. • I make detailed, original encounter maps for most of the combat and exploration scenes in the game. • I use Obsidian Portal for campaign management, so all the maps, character creation guides, house rules, and game summaries are available in one place. You won’t need an Obsidian Portal account yourself, though if you have one (which can be obtained without cost) you can add pages about your character to the pages I create about the world. • I'm always available to answer questions, whether you've already booked or whether you are considering booking. Feel free to message me here on StartPlaying.

Homebrew rules

To maintain the flavor Gygax intended for his world of Ærth, some ancestries and heritages have been tweaked for this game. Two cantrips that were very important to the original spell have also been strengthened and made more easily available to player characters. All house rules are at the game's obsidian portal for easy reference.

Safety

How Call Me Gary creates a safe table

This is a laid-back group. There's a lot of roleplaying, but fun is the #1 priority and taking ourselves too seriously isn't even on the list. I know many PF2/Foundry players prefer games with tons of visual effects and animation. I don't use many effects or animations for the same reason I don't use webcams: because I want to keep my games accessible for people who don't have top-flight computers or internet connections. PF2/Foundry has a ton of automation right out of the box. I don't use any automation add-on modules on top of that, because automation can get in the way of GM discretion and ability to tweak things on the fly. Expect a fair amount of theater of the mind in scenes that don't involve combat or dungeon exploration.
