Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Jake is a fantastic storyteller with an evident love and respect for the worlds he creates and the characters within them. Each session we have played so far has felt unique and interesting. We, as the players, led the plot while Jake guided it along with our actions and reactions. Jake is easy to work with on character creation, communicates campaign updates as well as in-game events very clearly, and utilizes several unique voices to make even minor NPCs memorable.

Jake was my first ever DM and he made me fall in love with tabletop games! Jake really helped the game come alive for me and created a world I could fully dive into. He provided such a safe atmosphere to learn and also have fun. He always made a note to give everyone their “main character moment”! I had so much fun playing in his campaign and I would again.

He is indeed one of the best Dungeon masters I know. I've had the privilege of playing multiple games with him over the years. Overall 10/10, amazing DM and amazing personality

An excellent choice for novice and veteran players alike. Not only is he a master of different voices and storytelling, but he's knowledgeable about the rules and does an excellent job of making sure you understand them. Thankful I got to have him as my first real DM.

Jake is an incredible GM! The amount of dedication he pours into his intricate world-building is incredible. He always did a great job of making sure all players felt included and had equal opportunity for action, lore building, character bonds, experience, etc. He put a lot of heart into our campaign and the purpose placed upon every scene, every NPC, every item, and so on and so forth was palpable. I absolutely loved my campaign with Jake. He puts a lot of thought, care, and love into his craft.

How to prepare

To join the game, players will need a computer with an adequate internet connection. They will also need a microphone and access to Discord, either through an internet browser or the Discord app. They will have to have a Roll20 account so that I can add them to the game. . If players choose to roll dice exclusively on Roll20 that is fine, but I love rolling my shiny math rocks at home. If you own dice and would like to use them that is fine with me. However, I reserve the right to ask anyone to roll on Roll20 if I feel that their rolls are suspicious in any way. . Players should bring water! Talking a lot takes a toll on your voice! Just make sure that any food or drink isn't so noisy that it distracts other players.

What I provide

As a GM I love storytelling. I'm a classically trained actor with a passion for voice acting. Each character you encounter will have a voice and a thought-out personality. I try to craft a compelling and immersive experience for all of my players. I engage the players in active roleplay as I take on the persona of each character, beast, or monster. I love to do sound effects with my voice and make you feel like you're experiencing what's going on. The absolute most important thing to me is that you have fun. If we do nothing that I have planned, but the players have fun, I count it as a productive session. . For this game, I'm striving to bring the wonderful world of Taldor'ei to life! We'll begin in the city of Westruun. It's been almost 30 years since the attack of the Chroma Conclave, but the city is still in a season of rebuilding. The black dragon Umbrasyl, as well as an attack from the since-disbanded Herd of Storms, took a heavy toll on the city and its populace. But, they've been busy rebuilding the city and the economy! In Westruun you'll find multiple new districts and even an outlet of Emon's famous magic shop, Gilmore's Glorious Goods! . As far as resources go, I have plenty. The majority of the game will be played through Theatre of the Mind, but when we get into combat we'll use Roll20 for all our tactical needs. During character creation (which is FREE) I can assist with different D&D resources. I provide a fillable PDF of character sheets to my players, and I have multiple sourcebooks in a digital format. I can also talk them through different options as I own a copious amount of 5e literature.

Gameplay details

After booking, players will be sent a link to a Google form where I'll ask them to provide any lines and veils. They will also be asked to fill out the Monte Cook RPG Consent Checklist. If a player has any concerns or triggers that they feel would be pertinent for me to know, they are more than welcome to contact me. . Players have the right to initiate a break if they need one for emotional, physical, or medical reasons. They have the right to message me directly during a session if something makes them uncomfortable. If a player behaves in a manner that violates the SPG Code of Conduct, they'll be given two warnings. After the third offense, they will be politely removed from the group. This is to ensure the safety and comfort of all players involved.

How will character creation work

Character creation will take place during the (FREE) Session 0. Players will work with their party members and the DM to figure out how their characters fit inside the world of Exandria. Characters can be related, intertwined, or even rivals. The focus will be on what is most interesting for the narrative. I want you to feel like your character is a real person with real connections! . Characters will be created at 3rd level using the "4d6 drop the lowest" method. Multiclassing is allowed, but it has to make sense narratively. If you want to use any Homebrew content (including my Speedster class!) you must clear it with me first. Players can use any classes and subclasses published by Wizards of the Coast. . Feats are allowed! Except for Lucky. The Lucky feat is just silly.
