Introduction to Dragonbane

Dragonbane | Campaign

About the adventure

This is a short campaign to introduce you to Dragonbane using the adventure locations found in the box set. You'll have about 20 sessions with the game in a small alpine valley with a bit more than a dozen fixed exploration locations and scores of imaginative and deadly side quests and random encounters. In between you'll be able to rest in the small town of Outskirts and knock back a tankard or two and recount your growing legends of epic adventure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lndcmdiaJZs What Free League has to say about Dragonbane: "Dragonbane is a classic fantasy tabletop roleplaying game full of magic, mystery, and adventure. It is designed from the ground up to facilitate fast and furious play, with very little prep time and adventures that are a breeze to run. This is a game with room for laughs at the table, while still offering brutal challenges for the adventurers. We call this playstyle “mirth and mayhem roleplaying” – great for long campaigns, but also perfect for a one-shot. Dragonbane is a translation of Drakar och Demoner, Scandinavia’s first and biggest tabletop RPG, originally launched in 1982. This new and reimagined edition has one foot firmly planted in the heritage of decades of Swedish gaming and the other in the modern and innovative game design for which Free League Publishing is known worldwide."

Recruiting notes

Join us for mirth & mayhem, don't worry that you missed session 0. 🌱—Beginner friendly: you don't need to know any of the rules to this game to show up and have a blast role playing on your very first night. You will learn to play the very best way, by playing and having fun. 🕵️—Lots of Mystery: if you like mystery and feel there isn't enough thinking in most RPGs, you'll be happily surprised by this game. 👻—Frightening Situations: Explore paranormal activities! 🏆—In-game Achievements: Celebrate your in-game milestones with fun personal and group achievements. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑—Inclusive: this game is fun for all people regardless of gender, ethnicity, or orientation. 🏋🏽—Growing Challenges: The game starts out simple and totally accessible to new players, but as you and your character gain experience you'll find yourself as challenged as your character is as you'll need to master new techniques and strategies to keep up with evolving threats in the late game.

How to prepare

This is an introductory game, so I will not be assuming that players have any knowledge of the system before hand and you can easily come to the table and learn as you play without buying the rules. If you are interested in more advanced campaigns, you should certainly support Free League by buying the core rules, but it just isn't necessary for this campaign. You will need either a PC or Mac-compatible PC with broadband internet access and electricity to play in this game; a mouse with left and right buttons, as well as a third button and mouse wheel is optimal for online use of Foundry VTT. You will need a Discord account to access the game chat. The Foundry VTT runs on a modern web browser, so there is nothing to install if you have a browser on your computer. If you have an older computer, you might consider using the Foundry Lightweight Client, which is a free lightweight web browser that gives you the most bang for your machine's capabilities. You can get it for free here: https://flc.ruleplaying.com/ If you intend to speak in the voice channel on Discord, you should have a headset with a microphone. *You will be required to set up a push-to-talk button*; you are, however, free to communicate to the group using text only in Discord, but you will then need speakers to hear their chat and the game sounds. Special text-only sessions are available for the deaf and hard of hearing. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you'd like to schedule one. Bringing a friend or two would help ensure we don't need to recruit additional players. While text-only is actually my preferred method of play, it does seem difficult to organize those games. Instructions for setting up the push-to-talk button and installing all the needed software are available on my Discord channel (#getting-started), to which you will be supplied a link when you join.

What I provide

I bring the sounds, rules, VTT, and the adventure. You bring yourself and a willingness to have an awesome time.

Gameplay details

This game is fantasy-adventure with a lot of hijinks, mystery, and hair-raising situations. Most of the action would be typical for a movie in the genre with a PG-13 rating, but it can occasionally get a little emotionally intense at times. Please consult the content warnings for this campaign and ensure that none of those topics are red lines for you. On the off chance that a player believes things have gone to far, we use a Yellow Card—Red Card system that any player can utilize if the scene is getting too intense; the use of these cards is done through clicking on an icon on the Foundry VTT screen, it is anonymous which player presented the card, but I will take immediate action when one is presented. A Yellow Card lets us fade-to-black and continue with the story on the other side of the disturbing content; a Red Card stops the game and invokes a 15-minute break. After the break, we can discuss what was going wrong and how we can best fix it for the group.
