Whether you're just discovering the world of D&D or looking to sharpen your skills, this adventure offers the ideal blend of lore, exploration, and tactical combat. The Lost Mines of Phandelver is one of the best entry points into the vast, magical world of the Forgotten Realms. As a 20-year veteran Dungeon Master, I specialize in helping new players learn the ropes, guiding you through everything from the game’s mechanics to its rich storytelling potential. You'll get a feel for how D&D is played, build confidence in your role-playing, and immerse yourself in Faerûn, one of the most iconic settings in the D&D universe. I strive to make each table a community. You will have access to a discord channel just for this game, where you can ask questions, get to know your fellow players, and just nerd out and have fun! What to Expect: Exploration of Faerûn: Unravel the secrets of the Forgotten Realms, a land filled with adventure, magic, and danger at every turn. Tactical Combat: Engage in thrilling battles using official combat maps and customized tokens on the Roll20 platform. Full Character Creation Support: Craft your character with guidance and support—whether you’re building one from scratch or using a pre-made character that I supply. Emphasis on Role-Playing: Dive deep into your character’s story and motivations, with a focus on storytelling and immersive role-play. Session 0: A complimentary session to introduce you to the game, where we'll create characters, discuss campaign expectations, and answer any questions you have. About me

Hello, adventurers! I’m Mat, though some of my TTRPG friends have playfully nicknamed me “Diamat”—there’s a pun behind it that I might share one day. I’ve been immersed in TTRPGs for over 20 years, starting with classics like GURPS and Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition. Most of the games I have played in the last few years have been in D&D 5e, so I am well versed in that system. I also have plenty of experience with systems like Fate, Genesys, and Cypher. I particularly enjoy Genesys and Cypher for their focus on player agency in shaping the outcomes of rolls. In my games, storytelling and role-playing take center stage. If you join my table, expect your character’s story to weave seamlessly into the overarching narrative. Your character’s history and choices will have meaningful impacts. If you love TTRPGs for their storytelling and character development, we’ll be a perfect match—I promise to reciprocate with richly detailed worlds and vibrant, lifelike NPCs. While D&D holds a special place in my heart, I also have a passion for science fiction and science fantasy, drawing inspiration from authors like Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe. I enjoy putting unique twists on classic RPG genres, bringing fresh and imaginative perspectives to the table. I primarily run games on Roll20, where I’ve built an extensive library of assets. I invest time in creating immersive maps and handouts to enhance the atmosphere and bring my worlds to life. If all this sounds like your kind of adventure, reach out! I look forward to seeing you at one of my tables.

Character creation

Creating your character

We’ll kick off with Session 0, where we’ll collaborate on building your character and defining how they fit into the story. This is a time to discuss what excites you about playing D&D and how your character connects with the rest of the party—whether as old allies or strangers brought together by fate. You have a few options when it comes to creating your character: Build Your Own: If you’re comfortable with the process, you’re free to create your character using your preferred method, whether that’s through D&D Beyond or directly in Roll20. Pre-Made Characters: For those who want to jump straight into the adventure, I offer a selection of pre-made characters that are ready to go. Custom Character Jam Session: If you’re looking for something truly unique, we can set up a half-hour character-building session where we’ll brainstorm your character’s backstory, class, and abilities. I’ll take that information and craft your hero into someone who matches your vision. In all cases, I’ll handle the technical setup. Once we finalize your character, I’ll load them into Roll20, complete with their stats, features, and gear, so you can focus on playing and having fun. Stats: We’ll decide stats together using an agreed-upon method, typically either point buy or rolling for stats, depending on the group's preference. Starting Level: Your character will begin at level 1, with plenty of room for growth as the adventure progresses. Source Material: I primarily use the core D&D 5e rulebooks, but I’m open to discussing content from other sources. If you have a specific book or subclass in mind, just ask!

The current party

This is a game meant to help new players break into the hobby. The Lost Mines of Phandelver is a published campaign the official Wizards of the Coast game setting, The Forgotten Realms. Players can expect to encounter classic D&D monsters, mysteries, and exploration of the Sword Coast, a part of the world of Faerun. This adventure could take between 4 and 6 sessions to complete. After which time, I would be thrilled to continue the adventure in the wide world beyond.

What Diamat (Mat) brings to the table

I run my games primarily on Roll20, utilizing a pro subscription for dynamic lighting, interactive maps, and a treasure trove of custom tokens and assets. Whether you're navigating the bustling streets of Neverwinter or exploring the hidden caves of Phandelver, these tools help immerse you in the world of Faerûn. Expect every battle and exploration to come to life on detailed, visually stunning maps. For those new to the game or looking to jump right in, I offer a collection of pre-made characters for a fast start. Prefer something more tailored? No problem! I provide custom character creation sessions where we’ll spend half an hour discussing your character’s goals, backstory, and the type of experience you hope to get out of D&D. I’ll craft a character that’s uniquely yours, ready to dive into the adventure. My DM Style: Rules as a Guideline, Not a Limitation: I stick close to rules-as-written to ensure fairness, but I’m flexible and love incorporating the Rule of Cool. If you can think of a creative way to wield your axe, cast a spell, or outsmart an enemy, I’ll make it work! Player Agency and Impact: Your choices will shape the story in meaningful ways. Whether it’s how you handle a negotiation or what alliances you form, expect your decisions to echo throughout the campaign. Story-Driven with Tactical Combat: While I enjoy the strategy of tactical combat, my games focus heavily on story and role-play. Every battle and encounter has purpose and ties into the greater narrative. Immersive Atmosphere: Expect character voices, ambient sounds, and thematic music to set the tone and keep you immersed in the adventure. My goal is to make every session feel cinematic, whether you’re delving into a dungeon or engaging in intense role-play scenes.
