About the adventure

In this world, like many countless others, before there was life there was chaos. Swirls of energy, formless thoughts and colors, waiting for the guiding hand of the gods to give it form, function, and life. When the gods began to tame this world, they did so not with strength of will or divine impetus but with machines. They built vast labyrinthine machinations, each keeping a facet of reality in check, keeping yet another piece of the world from falling back into chaos. As the world grew more rigid out of the swirl of chaos that came before, so too did the life that sprang up amongst the seas and rolling plains. Mankind, unwavering in their devotion to the gods and their role as caretakers of this world for generations, were one day gifted what they called magic. The tiniest sliver of divine machinery handed down from the gods like an older sibling passing off an unwanted toy. With this new revelation, some of mankind became disillusioned by their creators, understanding now that the world was not of divine will, but of rigid rules set forth in physical form that can be tweaked, manipulated, and destroyed. And so the greatest mages set their minds towards their own creations to rival the gods, one day breaching through the divine gates and into the heavens themselves. The seemingly endless maze of gears awaited them on the other side but what awaits beyond the entrance? -- In this variation of Godbound, players will be taking on the identity of a powerful Archmage, powerful enough to breach into heaven. But what will you do with this newfound strength? Are you there to kill a god? To be a god? Or something else entirely? This is a high power level campaign, with beginning characters at and beyond the strengths of your typical 20th level D&D character. As such, the stakes are much higher, the challenges much greater, and the answer to life's problems is rarely "hit it until it dies." The campaign will last as long as there is world left to explore, expiring at it's natural end. There is no pre-written adventure path and the world is at the players' disposal. Divine might is here for the taking, if you can only hold on to it.

How to prepare

Having a microphone and speakers that work with Discord will be a necessity. I will give all players an invite to a Discord server for voice chat during games and text threads for sharing information between sessions. Having a webcam is suggested and preferred, though not strictly required. Having an account on Discord and Owlbear Rodeo will be needed to access the voice chat and virtual table top. Chrome is currently necessary for the broadcasting of audio though more platforms are being added to Fantasy+. While knowing the rules of Godbound is helpful, it is not required. A generalized and strong understanding of roleplaying generally is enough and the rest I can guide us through.

What I provide

I am currently using Owlbear Rodeo as a virtual tabletop, making sure we have character tokens, maps, and plenty of pseudo physical interaction through the virtual space, as well as ambient music and sound effects to go along with scenes. While I'm no voice actor, I do my best to make scenes engaging through descriptive storytelling, a mix of in character voices and 3rd person narration, as well as art and music to bolster the scene. My GMing style is very much a "rule of cool" or improvisational "yes, and" type of gaming. The rules are framework to be utilized, but not restricted to. I am here to facilitate the players telling a story and being an arbiter of the narrative, not to tell players they cannot do a thing because it isn't outlined verbatim on page 42 of the handbook. If it's logical and has some basis in the rules and shared world we build, it can be tried.

Gameplay details

A session 0 will be had before any new campaign as well as brief mini sessions as needed or when new players are added. All content warnings are only potential and may or may not occur according to the player's actions and wishes. Any hard lines can be discussed in Session 0 to be applied going forward if those players decide to continue in the next session. At any time a player can call a halt to a scene to take a break and address any content that may be problematic. Regardless of these warnings, however, troublesome graphic content will often be met with a quick 'fade to black' as opposed to any drawn out or graphic descriptions. All of us are here to have fun, not be uncomfortable. I would rather we have open and honest discussions about how the game is commencing than anyone to harbor any animosity or anxiety over content that can easily be done away with in the name of enjoying ourselves.

How will character creation work

Character creation will be discussed during session 0, though it will mostly follow the processes outlines in the Godbound core book. Some flavor text modifications will be needed as well as homebrew rules for anything players may want to have that are not in the rules yet. These will be discussed as a group to make sure everyone is on board with any changes. Any Sine Nomine books are potentially useful for creation so long as it makes sense. OSR, AD&D, oWoD, and other books can be used as reference material for figuring out these homebrew rules as well. Bring all your knowledge and desires for your character to the table during creation. Between session 0 and 1 we can hammer out any further details and make sure a sheet with the characters mechanics and features is ready for the first game.
