About the adventure

The Straits of Ergoth have long plagued the sailors of the Midnight Sea. Composed of a multitude of rocky spires and islets, it's swift, dark currents hide treacherous reefs, with many a fell creature lurking just beneath the surface. It's jagged peaks are dotted with crumbling ruins from a bygone age and it's shores are littered with the skeletal remains of many an unfortunate vessel. Anchor's Bay, a fortified island city just north of the Straits, was once a bustling hub for commerce in the Southern Reach, but trade has taken a dive as of late. Pirates have been plaguing merchant ships in the region. Compounding this problem, savage fish-like humanoids have been raiding nearby coastal settlements. And if that wasn't enough, there are whispers that a monstrous evil has awakened in the depths. You and your companions were dropped off in Anchor's Bay a month ago, and few ships have docked at port since your arrival. Work was not scarce when you arrived, but many of those opportunities have vanished, along with the town's trade. Your funds are running low and it is late evening on a moon-filled night when you all gather at the Cork & Bottle to discuss your next course of action... This game is the start of a long campaign which aims for characters to advance to a high level adventuring, drama and world changing events, if they survive.

About me

I have decades of TTRPG experience as a GM in various genres, including high and low fantasy, modern horror, spy-thrillers, superhero, steampunk and sci-fi, while using multiple game systems (too many to list). I prefer to run persistent sandbox games, where the campaign environment is fully fleshed out behind the scenes and your characters are in charge of their fates. I strive to build campaigns with emergent story arcs and engaging character development, while creating situations that challenge players and create memorable experiences.

Character creation

Creating your character

This old-school homebrew campaign starts at 1st level. Allowed characters races are: Human, Dwarf, Elf, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Halfling or Gnome. Characters can be made before Session zero using Point Buy OR we can wait for Session Zero where you can roll 4d6, drop lowest in front of the group.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a mic, and sign up for a free account on Discord (the link will be given to you during game signup). From there, you'll be sent a link to Roll20.net, which is where your character sheets will live.

What GM Serge brings to the table

I'm a Pro Roll20 user (11 yrs) and I bring a custom roll20 adventure that I wrote and designed called Dwellers in the Dark. I bring custom illustrations and stories meant to challenge and entertain. As DM, I run Rules As Written, however I will demure to common sense and sometimes even "the rule of cool". This is a start-up campaign, based on a port island city, where players will have a few opportunities presented to them. What will you decide? I don't know... That's what makes it fun! :)

Safety

How GM Serge creates a safe table

The content warnings cover a large range of possible scenarios which MIGHT occur based on player decisions and the game environment. During Session Zero we will discuss play expectations for the campaign, and how to use the safety tools provided if necessary. The campaign will strive to be inclusive and welcoming to new players, but the scenarios within represent a grim fantasy world, where magic, monsters and gods exist. The world is fully realized, so expect all manner of possible scenarios and their outcomes to take place. This campaign is not scripted, however there is a timeline of events that take place during play, but players are not beholden to it, and may navigate their environment as they will.
