About me
Salue! ("Hello" in Latin) My name is Gandalfina Face-and-Heart* and I use three different sets of pronouns: e / em / eir / eirs / emself OR fey / fem / fear / fierce / femself OR be / bim / bos / bos / bimself Before I start introducing myself, I wanna say two things. First, I am in the San Francisco Bay Area; if all of my players are from that area (and safety allows), I am MORE than happy to meet in-person, rather than running online. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, if your ability to hire me is adversely affected by being a member of a marginalized group, please contact me; I will work something out with you that works with your financial ability. That being said, on to the introduction... I am, quite literally, alive because of role-playing games. As a young, genderqueer child I often wondered if my own existence was imaginary. Even in a progressive state like California, there wasn’t a word for my feelings - not until Riki Anne Wilchins coined the term genderqueer - before I had already entered puberty. The many worlds of TTRPGs, and the ways in which they were actively created by the players at the table, were among the first spaces in which I could exist, joyously free from the bonds of cisgender heteronormativity. For this reason and many others ~ including the breakdown of mass media's objectifying relationship to stories by emphasizing the shared subjectivity of all participants in a story ~ I am quite the champion of interactive fiction. I've been on a number of TTRPG streams and podcasts at this point, and plan to be on as many as I can! You can find the list of every show I've been on by looking at my Curriculum Vitae (there's a link to it on my Linktree at https://linktr.ee/queermythopoeia ). I also (sadly inconsistently) maintain a blog where I present new RPG material, session write-ups, and analyses of RPG sourcebooks for all manner of games (also find-able by means of my Linktree). * I use 18 different names interchangeably ~ choose a few favorites and change it up as often as you can! Proficiencies
Players say this GM is great at:
Inclusive
Creativity
Storytelling
I've played several systems and multiple sessions with Gandalfina. I really enjoy the inclusiveness that fae brings to gaming. I like that Flurp is committed to the mental well-being of the players. It's also great that fae will work with families that have a lot of *events* like ours (#raisingatoddler). Merlin Monroe is good at making players feel welcome to a system and for making sure everyone is on the same page. Fae is also willing to work with players to create scenarios that they are interested in encountering in the games. Collaborative worldbuilding is fun and each voice is valued in the process.
Emily creates engaging worlds to play in and lets player characters really shine. Both campaigns I've played with faer have been very enjoyable. Fae also is very committed to making sure players feel safe and welcomed in every session. In the Dark Ages Fae game, in particular, fae has a deep interest in the historical setting that adds a lot of depth to the world.
Kaleidoscope-Eyes ran a game for a few friends and me. Fey accommodated a new player in a way that was truly engaging and provided a surprisingly role play oriented session given how new some of us were. I really love that fey emphasized the story telling of spellcasting, even for our brand new player. 😁
Emily did well. The descriptions were well done. Effort was put into bringing people into the action. A great deal of attention was paid to making sure people were comfortable. I would also like to note that as the game has progressed, a great deal of effort and care has been put into making sure that people are heard and ideas are shared well. We've been having a blast together. We've built a great little game and Emily plays a big part in that. I love the enthusiasm for our characters. I am given the impression that Emily genuinely likes us and our characters and that is sadly rare for me.
Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation will happen during Session Zero, or afterwards in a free one-to-one session if the Bravery/Consent/Safety/Boundaries discussion consumes Session Zero. Players are assumed to be mages, Proximi, or Sleepwalkers, though other Chronicles of Darkness splats (vampires, werewolves, sin-eaters, mummies, hunters, demons, beasts, changelings, deviants, prometheans, gifted mortals, etc.) are possible, if the player wishes. Mages will be created according to starting mage rules according to the 2nd edition rulebook. Other splats may be created more akin to the newly Awakened mages (which is what the two pre-existing characters are). All types of mage are allowable, including the five orders of the Pentacle Alliance, Nameless or Apostates, members of Nameless Orders, Seers of the Throne, Scelesti, Tremere, Banishers, Reapers, etc.
Now is the time to join us! We've just finished a story that had MAJOR implications, and everything is all shook up, so it will be SUPER EASY to weave your character in!
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Please have the technology necessary to connect to Discord, including a microphone. Though I would love to see your face while you play and thus encourage you to have your webcam on, I do not require it. Other than a Discord account (and mebbe downloading the Discord client/app), there are no programs or websites to which you need access. Knowledge of the rules and a rough idea of a character before Session Zero is wonderful and helpful, but not at all necessary. Both pre-existing players had neither, and we have told a deep and engrossing story together.
What Emily Loretta Flummox (et alia) brings to the table
I bring an active Discord channel discussing the game between sessions, on my Discord server where I run the game. I have exhaustively mapped out the mage societies of the San Francisco Bay Area, including connections to other Chronicles of Darkness splats. However, my GMing style is deeply concerned with player agency and collaboration with the players as fellow storytellers, so expect to be actively involved in determining the direction, themes, and conflicts of the story. Much of my efforts as one of the storytellers in the campaign is to find the mental/emotional weaknesses of the characters and then push on them. I also bring an exhaustive knowledge of and deep thought about the cosmological considerations of the setting and campaign; every once in a while, a session involves answering detailed questions about that from the players and helping them understand the larger implications of campaign events. I try hard to keep my eyes on considerations of sociocultural power dynamics in the game, as well as player inclusivity, and am very open to hearing when I can improve!
Platforms used
Safety
How Emily Loretta Flummox (et alia) creates a safe table
Players are given to a communally created, living Lines/Veils/Highlights documents during Session 0, which will be held with all players when they join. N/O/X cards are primarily communicated by means of Discord's VC text chat, though spoken or video versions will be very much respected. Every session opens with a 15-minute, detailed reminder of the group's Bravery, Consent, Safety, and Boundaries Practices/Tools to ensure that everyone is on the same page and to ensure that these practices/tools are not forgotten. Also, to repeat: Although the possibility exists for this game to engage with erotic scenes and themes with appropriate safety/consent tools (and has done so, at times), this is not an ERP. If you’re looking for fapping opportunities or material, don’t waste your money on me; find a game offering that.
