About the adventure

The world has two sides, one in the light and one in the shadow. Most of humanity only ever sees things by the light of day. Some, however, especially those who live in the torn city of New Avalon, peer into the shadow, and the endless war that rages there. Vampires, Werewolves, Wizards, Demons, they're all real. And they're all hungry for power. A power struggle that results in uneasy alliances, bitter resentments, and countless casualties. The war has raged for so long, across untold centuries, and has resulted in the formation of four factions: Mortalis, Night, Power, and Wild. The world has been their war zone, and nations have been captured by these shadowy factions. The final unclaimed territory, the city that could tip the balance of power in the world, is New Avalon. That's where you come in. You're a part of New Avalon, whether you were born here or not, and its fate comes down to the choices you make. What will those choices be? Will you fight for your little corner of the world, keep those you love safe? Or will you fight for power, rising to the top of your chosen gang? Will you pick the side you were born into, or will you betray your family for a new cause? The choices are yours... The Gangs of New Avalon is a setting using the Urban Shadows 2e game system. This game takes place in the dark underbelly of a city, and delves deeply into the personal lives of its characters. Not just their goals, but also their vices. A highly narrative and role play-heavy experience, the destiny of your character is in your hands. Will you rise to the top, or fall prey to corruption? And more importantly, will the city of New Avalon even notice?

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

How to prepare

Please have a microphone and camera prepared. It is ideal for the RPG experience if we can see everyone, though if that poses difficulties we can figure something out. Players should have a Zoom account. The free version will work perfectly fine, but I will only accept players into the meetings, so please have your name set to match your name on startplaying You don't need to memorize the rules, but do be familiar with your character and what they can do. More important than anything, know who your character is and what they want. Knowing a characters goals and dreams is going to help you have a fun role-playing experience. And this is, at the end of the day, all about fun!

What I provide

I will provide the rule books and character sheets, distributed in PDF form upon sign up. Ambient music is difficult in the virtual medium, but every character will have a distinct voice to help add texture and immersion to the role play experience. As with most Powered by the Apocalypse games, the Rule of Cool and Rule of Narrative are supreme. I am a fan of your characters from the word go, and want to see what happens to them in this world we create together.

Gameplay details

I use a session 0 in all of my campaigns, and especially when entering new groups. This gives me a chance to get to know everyone, and to establish other mental health safety concerns and techniques that I have used both as a GM and teacher/educator. Session 0 is also vital to my understanding of the type of story the group wants to tell moving forward. All sessions are virtual, and so private messaging on Zoom/Discord is the primary tool for X cards, while N and O cards can be more public. It is important to note that the New Avalon setting is meant to be dark and gritty, reflective of the real world, and that is shown in the content warnings. However, any of the above can be lined or veiled depending on the needs of the group. My primary focus is on you, your characters, and how to best tell the story your group wants. This can't be done if events in the story cause actual real world pain through triggers of trauma. My job as your Narrator, is to curate a story that you will enjoy and get fulfillment from, and part of that includes keeping the environment safe for everyone.

How will character creation work

Character creation will be handled in the second part of session 0, though a good deal of it can be done on your own before then. Look through the archetypes, see what kind of character's story interests you and what you'd be comfortable role playing as. Familiarize yourself with the material I send, but don't overworry about the memorizing the nitty gritty rules.
