About the adventure

The Northern Land of the Giantdowns has long been wild and untamed, mostly infested with monsters and humanoids, there are more ancient tombs than houses here. Still, some hardy settlers, exiles and tribal nomads have put down roots here, refusing to be driven out by the endless bandits, monsters and actual giants that assail them. However, with their enemies becoming more and more organized, the small hamlets of Rjuvik must unite to fight off those who would reduce this land back to a lawless waste, for this they must rally to their King. It is time for a Noble Warrior to become..... King of the Giantdowns ! Enter into a gritty low fantasy campaign set in the Frozen North. Set in the Legendary campaign setting of Birthright that inspired Game of Thrones, this campaign has as it's primary focus, adventures which build to trying to form the disparate Rjuvik humans into a unified kingdom. The Rjuvik humans are a blend of various "northlander" tropes, everything from actual Viking sagas and Scandinavian history/proto-history, to fantasy archetypes of the Cimmerians and such, whilst trying to still keep things sober and historical-feeling. Expect themes of honour, destiny, politics (and realpolitik), relationships, secrets, betrayals, generativity, legacy, glorious victory, ignominious defeat, and drinking mead. A good level of role playing, problem solving and political savvy are recommended, as well as a willingness to do a bit of reading that the DM will give, -knowing some background, history and culture of the world will greatly enhance the experience. Whilst battles and such might end up being extremely common sometimes, whole sessions may also be spent talking and figuring out NPCs and alliances etc., so it's also possible that session(s) may also pass without an attack roll being made. There is likely also going to be time spent here and there building and managing estates and families. In this setting your family, lineage and destiny/fate are important, so we'll work these out in a session 0 (there are fate dice/tables to add some *spice*). There are extra mechanics on top of the usual 5E elements to fit the setting (eg : noble bloodlines in Birthright are acquired from ancient deities), races have been reworked, and generally characters start with a little more than "regular" characters. However, there are also some restrictions on various choices so as to better fit the Setting, and some rules are going to be amended to better fit the tone. So, gather 'round the fire, put on your hringserks, grab your sverð, roll the Fate Dice and lift a horn of ale to those warriors killed and mutilated by orcs, skål !

About me

Ave and all other greetings! Where shall we take your adventure this week? If you're looking for someone uniquely passionate about RPGs, I'm your pick. I've been running games for 17 years, and the craft is very familiar to me, though I've sadly never met anyone more fanatical about games than I am (and I've met Matt Mercer twice). Note I'm on UK time. My idea of time well-spent is reading an RPG manual (while my child and cats attack me), so I've got lots of experience of various systems, experience in everything from semi-pro acting to radio work, and your adventure could be light-hearted and whimsical, deep and complex or anything in between. Maybe you'd like a "rule of cool" 5E game with cannon-wielding battle pigs? How about about a tragic and emotional journey through 1990's Indiana in Vampire the Masquerade? What if you're all roadies & bodyguards for an insane euro-rockerboy in the dystopian world of Cyberpunk 2020? Any new player willing to cultivate a love of the game is welcome, introducing the rules to someone is great (another cultist for the dice god!). I think that one of the tough things about modern life is that it often stifles our creativity and imagination, which can be a source of such joy for all of us; so here's the invitation now, to embark on something quite *fantastical*

Character creation

Creating your character

We're going to be rolling up characters together in session zero, though going into this with some idea of what you want to be, is a very good idea. The base assumption is that you're playing a Rjuvik human, but other choices are possible (the classics like Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Half-Elf) though in this world being a non-human seriously changes how you relate to others, and how they relate to you! There are some rules changes and additions, extra choices, and some restricted choices, primarily regarding spellcasters, we'll go over this in session zero. You'll also be creating your reason for being in the Giantdowns and your reasons for trying to unite the settlers (or help someone else do that), you also likely have some family/clan/friends with you in the area, so this bears thinking about as well/

The current party

This is going to be Sundays 1700 or 1800 start UK time. It's four hours of play divided in two by a 15-minute interval, though it's possible we go over a bit if we're in the middle of something. Planning a session zero a week before session "one". Races/ancestries have been reworked, and there are a fair few changes, restrictions and extra options being made/added to make the game more in line with the setting, and also to make this a more advanced/challenging campaign than a "basic" or assumed campaign, these changes coming from both the dungeon master's guide and from suggestions from 3rd party content and older editions. Not all spells are available in this setting, so ask if you want to play as a spell-caster! spell-casters are perceived quite differently in the world by normal people compared to "ordinary" folk, -further you're basically a member of a semi-secret society! it's a complicated existence. This is the Birthright Campaign setting, and even playing as Viking-expies on the frontier of civilization, a great thrust of the game is politics, societies, relationships and allegiances.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You're going to need Discord, Tabletop simulator and a reasonable mic/headset setup. Preferably you'll have some basic familiarity with the D&D 5th edition rules, and also some knowledge of the tropes and storytelling conventions regarding Scandanavia and Britain during the Early Middle ages, if not some actual historical knowledge.

What Wizard_Tea (or AK) brings to the table

Maps and dice will be in the tabletop simulator virtual room. Character sheet PDFs will be provided. Documents with relevant background information regarding the world and such will be provided if necessary (I'll try to keep it as brief as people want)

Safety

How Wizard_Tea (or AK) creates a safe table

We'll be going over our various lines in session zero. There will be a discord thread for stars / wishes. There are some rules changes, extra choices and restricted choices, these details will be shown in session zero.
