Sijanese Interlude, an Exalted Essence Early Adopter Game

Sijanese Interlude, an Exalted Essence Early Adopter Game

Exalted Essence | Campaign

About the adventure

I've been backing exalted essence since the kickstarter, and I like what I've seen so far, but I want to try it. Come with me as we try this new simpler form of exalted. One of the fun things about essence is that you can be any of the exalt types: solar, lunar, dragon-blooded, sidereal, alchemical, infernal, abyssal, etc. Let's kick the tires and look under the hood together.

Game style

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Party notes

The Mansion on 12 Carnelian Peaches in Cinnabar district, in Nexus, does not look unusual, although it is well appointed, with lush gardens on its top level, and spacious, high-ceilinged rooms. Within, the Nadir Infernal, Stelsor, and the Jade Alchemical, Fortifier-of-hearts-and-bones, have been there longest. Their staff directed by Stelsor to charity causes, civic improvement, or criminal-assisted enterprises, as the whim strikes him, while Fortifier is more focused on charity, but also involved into a Mortal cult of Autochton he founded with other Alchemicals not that long ago. They also have a long-running program to promote movable type printing. The Solar Twilight, Dreamflower and her minor tea god familiar, Chalai, study mystical forces within the city, and liaise with various deities and spirit courts, finding meaning in the Spirit's many plots, opposing ghosts and spectres. Rohen Velen, aka Echo, the Solar Zenith, moved in from Y'danna, bringing with him the bustle of commerce, soon to be augmented with the winged countenance of great Rocs. Peleps Danic Rarida, from Grey Falls, escaping within an inch of his life from a terrorist attack on the Realm's flying ships, fled with his own flying ship, now disguised as a regular riverboat, and wonders who hated him quite this much, even as he makes allies to get his ship repaired, and the mystery solved.

Eric has been running Exalted Essence for me and while our group is contentious at times he is still able to deliver a dynamic and interesting experience. Our party has had different i priorities which has forced the group to split and while there were some issues with time management he has done massive improvements. This leads to another great thing, if you talk to him with your feedback he is listening and looking to improve which is something many people say but few do. Further his understanding of the lore of the game and his willingness to listen to work with your plans (so long as they don't break anything) have allowed for some interesting story tones and events to take place. Overall you will have a good fun time with him so long as your willing to work with him to tell a grand tale.

I highly recommend this GM for an inclusive experience and hard work that shows in the world building and character dialogues with NPCs.

Eric is great at making the player characters feel like an important part of the story. He goes above and beyond to write stories about the player characters and their actions and how they affect the world. He is also very helpful with the very complex process of creating an Exalted character and guiding you through all the steps.

Eric is great at having a story and setting prepared while also being open to suggestions from players. While making characters and learning the VTT, Eric has been patient and helpful.

Additional details

How to prepare

I need to know which of the players are even remotely familiar with Essence, and which ones have vs which ones need, a copy of the pdf. Session zero will also serve as a primer on the setting, and allow us to choose collaboratively, where the adventure will take place.

What I provide

PDF of the rules, dice, link to an android dice roller that understands the system. PDF maps provided in game.

Gameplay details

I'm exploring the system, I'm relatively new to exalted, but not to RPGs, I'm hoping to do a light intro to a new system, and help everyone get familiar.
