About the adventure

A hub of trade and prosperity, the town of Jarek's Rest finds itself struggling under a sudden period of local distress and renewed banditry. One day, when an important priest dies under mysterious circumstances, the town has no choice left but to call on a group of adventurers to assist them in getting to the root of this recent crime wave... That's where YOU come in! 🥷 Fight thieves and bandits! 🧝 Meet unusual locals! 🔍 Uncover why a group of thieves has taken root in the trade town! Murder at Jarek's Rest is a homebrew learning campaign for players new to tabletop roleplaying games or Dungeons and Dragons 5e. I will walk the group through character creation, introduce the group to basic rules and concepts in D&D and tabletop, and generally act as a font of knowledge as the party solves the mysterious circumstances plaguing Jarek's Rest through the campaign. This campaign will start at Level 1 and take you to Level 4+, and will take roughly 10 sessions to complete.

About me

I started playing tabletop roleplaying games over a decade ago when I bought an old copy of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons from a flea market. Since then, I've played in dozens of tabletop campaigns of numerous systems both as a 'forever DM' as well as a player. I'm a strong believer in inclusivity and accessibility both in and out of the game. Some of my greatest joys in tabletop are introducing tabletop games to new players, as well as telling and sharing stories that build a personal connection to my players. Additionally, I work as a game developer by profession and I as a hobby project have written, designed and self-published my own rules-light and genre-agnostic tabletop roleplaying system called the "Runt Tabletop Roleplaying System" which was successfully funded via Kickstarter.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will collaboratively create our characters and fill character sheets in a group session together, building each player's characters step-by-step during Session 0. Characters will be created at Level 1 using the Basic Rules of 5th Edition to give a base of understanding, and will grow throughout the campaign. Players should come to Session 0 with only a general idea of what kind of character they would like to play that reflects their interests, and we will build them in-game together. I also have a 'respec' approach to character creation when running a campaign and am totally willing to accept character changes or re-visiting character creation again later on if a character doesn't suit your playstyle or needs.

The current party

The ideal time for this campaign will be every Thursday, but flexible to what works best for most of the group!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A working microphone, Discord account, stable internet connection, and the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition Basic Rules (which is available for free online) are required. Players are encouraged to download and browse the Basic Rules of the Dungeons and Dragon's 5th edition beforehand, but it is by no means required as these are just guidelines and we will learn about them more as we play the game. Physical dice and a printout of one's character sheet are nice, but digital alternatives exist and can be supplied. Visual references (battle layouts, mood images, etc.) will be supplied by myself.

What Devon W. brings to the table

digital materials for players (dice, character sheets, rule books), Discord server hosting and organization, flexible beginner campaign, years of experience DMing explicitly for new and beginner tabletop players

Safety

How Devon W. creates a safe table

During Session 0 we will walk through safety tools, character creation for everyone's characters for the campaign, and learning some of the basic concepts of the game. In Session 1 we will begin play proper! Players can expect gameplay to carry out over Discord using the "Theatre of the Mind" approach, with battle maps used for visualization and aiding in spatial understanding but everything else described via speech. Webcams are not required for participants and will only be used by myself and for those comfortable with it. I will teach and explain the game's mechanics as we play and get more comfortable with them, and I have a "no stupid questions" policy so I'm always open to elaborating or re-explaining things that don't make sense :) I tend to be very liberal with content warnings, so please note not everything included in these warnings will necessarily be heavily involved in the campaign.
