Dungeon of the Dying Day - 5 sessions - Entertaining Dungeon Crawl with battle and exploration focus

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

The Dungeon of the Dying Day is in real time around 10-15 hours (four to five sessions) dungeon crawl designed by me. It is made for a party of 4-5 5th level characters. In this adventure the characters are working together with a time limit to stop a cult from opening a portal to the Abyss and allowing Demon Lords to enter the material plane. The adventure has clear goals for the players and is meant to be an entertaining experience with a sense of urgency. The focus of the game will be mainly on combat and adventuring. The characters can also use their social skills with the NPCs they encounter, but be advised that due to the nature of the game, there isn't going to be room for the players to explore their own characters very much. Because of this, character backstory and alignment are totally optional choices and in practice, will not play any role in the game.

How to prepare

You need: - A good computer/laptop. - A headset or similar for hearing and talking. - Discord installed and working. - D&D Beyond account. - (OPTIONAL) You can already create an account to The Forge. (forge-vtt.com) We will do this together during the session zero if you don't want to do it before the session zero.

What I provide

I will share the Player's Handbook, Elemental Evil and Xanathar's Guide to Everything books with you in D&D Beyond, so you will be able to create your character. I will also provide the licenced version of FoundryVTT where the gameplay happens.

Gameplay details

I run my game with the idea of easy English, so even if English is not your first language, it is okay. I follow Rules As Written, however, few exceptions: - Hit points are fixed, no dice rolling. - Critical hit is calculated in the following way: maximum value of the damage die + damage die rolled + ability modifier + any other bonus that might be affecting. - Spell Silvery Barbs is banned. - Drinking a potion can be done as a bonus action. - Same ability check can be rolled maximum of twice, if at least two party members are present (like for example when trying to intimidate someone). The check can be rolled individually or assisted (help action providing advantage for the other player). - Flanking doesn't give any benefit. I am also a fan of Rule Of Cool. I want to reward the players for good roleplaying and creative thinking. My philosophy is to say "yes". However, not everything can be accepted even in a fantasy game. We want to create a game that is cool, not a game that is meaningless. I use Discord, D&D Beyond and FoundryVTT (similar to Roll20) to run my game. In FoundryVTT I use modules to automate the game. You don't need to have anything else but a working computer/laptop, a good internet connection and Discord on your computer to get started with me. Note that I am also recording some of my sessions and by attending my game you give your consent for me to use the material in any and every way. (This might mean, for example, publishing footage on the internet to promote my games.) First we are going to book a half an hour session, just you and me, to get you situated for the game. This will be done using Discord and it will serve as session zero. (This is also your opportunity to tell if you have any topics that you don’t like.) You need a computer or a laptop. I will check with you that you have access to D&D Beyond character creation and Foundry through Forge (server hosting service) and I will give you instructions for character creation. If all this is familiar to you, we should be done quite quickly. If not, we can book a longer session and see together that everything is clear. Part of my job as the DM is to help you with all this as well.

How will character creation work

You create a 5th level character. You have all Player's Handbook, Elemental Evil and Xanathar's Guide to Everything races and classes in use and the books are shared with you in D&D Beyond. Multiclassing is allowed. You can also choose any feat from these books if you decide to take a feat at 4th level. Note that in this adventure there are no firearms. If you prefer not to create your own character, you can also choose one of my pre-generated characters. The options are a human cleric, a dwarf fighter, a gnome wizard and an elf rogue. If you are interested in a pre-generated character, mention it during session zero and I'll give you the full character sheet. I will give you all the information you need for your character creation, but just as a heads up: For ability scores I use my own system. You have 72 points that you can freely put to your ability scores, but no ability score can be above 16 nor below 7 before the racial bonuses. For example, an elf can put their dexterity score to be 16 and the total will be 18 because of the racial bonus.
