Stranger Things: Hunt for the Thessalhydra, a 5e D&D game set in Greyhawk

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | One-Shot

About the adventure

The Primordial Temple The fortune tellers have gone mad! A great portend has shown the Temple of Elemental Evil will appear in the Crystalmist Mountains within a fortnight! Only those brave enough to enter the elemental chaos should attempt it, for it will fade back into the Primordial Planes within hours once it has appeared. Will you get trapped and damned to a life in the Elemental Planes, or will you escape with treasures from exotic places? A special private adventure for players of the Greyhawk Lives! campaign. You should create a 7th level character for this adventure. You do not have to play previous adventures for it to make sense; its written as a one-shot in a series of one-shots. This is a "Mixer" game. Its intent is that players can mix-and-match groups with new friends across our groups. This adventure will not give XP, but will give money, favors, and homebrew items not otherwise available to the campaign. This is a $10 adventure. All of the proceeds will go to boost "Vecna's Secrets", a library of DM books and monsters on Roll20 so the DM can have a broader access to content when creating games.

Recruiting notes

Things are getting strange in the World of Greyhawk! Play the Stranger Things Starting Set with us, and learn to play Dungeons and Dragons in an adventure written by Mike Wheeler (or, so the author claims), co-written by his friend "Will the Wise". You will help a local noble fight a monster that has been terrorizing the countryside, and make some awesome friends in the process. We will teach you how to play, and all in-game materials are provided.

Jeremy knows his craft and I have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions so far. He does an excellent job in fleshing out the lore of Greyhawk. I really like that when I tried something unorthodox in combat he allowed for creativity.

Jeremy is a fantastic GM! He led me through my first D&D game and I had the best time! He's great at explaining game mechanics, telling a story, and giving suggestions when it's your turn to do an action. I played a one-shot with a lot of experienced players, and Jeremy was able to create a balance that kept the game exciting for the seasoned players but simple enough for me to follow along.

Jeremy is an excellent DM! He is able to breathe fun and excitement into every session no matter if it’s combat or role play heavy, or a balance of both. He has such an expansive D&D background that it is easy for him to help out new players and make sure everyone is having a good time. Highly recommended!

Great GM, allows you to play for the fun of it. Great story teller

Very knowledgeable about the rules and history of the game/modules. Doesnt cause an issue for him to change the overall style of play; RP vs MH. Not afraid to kick problem members.

Additional details

How to prepare

All players must have: - Roll20 Account - Discord Account - Must join our discord: https://discord.gg/s2m9syRNux - Desktop/Laptop with Chrome - Speaker / Microphone (through computer, or Discord) app on phone and a quiet place to play.

What I provide

Everything Else. I have the adventure, pro accounts on Roll20 and multiple other platforms, and lots of fun. I am running a weekly Greyhawk D&D campaign that this can feed into if players want to keep the fun going after this.

Gameplay details

I use several API's (program scripts) to speed up combat and make it easier to understand for newer players. I'm not very rules heavy if it slows down the game, but I will advise players that don't know how to play, or players that are unsure of what they should do if things slow down. As I have over 30 years of DM experience, I have a lot of improv techniques to keep things going, but I always advise players to look past their character sheet and imagine what they would do in that situation.

How will character creation work

For this adventure, characters are pre-made. In a closed group of six friends, I'd be happy to let everyone play whatever they wanted, but in a "pick-up" group of strangers, the pre-made characters are well rounded and work as a group. If you don't understand what that means as you are newer to the game, don't worry, all you need to do is show up and we'll give you a character and teach you how to play. We will also allow the players to determine who plays which character, in the chat before we start the game.
