About the adventure

Night Below is a D&D campaign that takes characters from 1st to 10th level and perhaps beyond. There are ample opportunities for exploration, social interaction, and tactical combat. An extended portion of the campaign is set in the dangerous environs of the Underdark, where the characters will meet strange and dangerous monsters and civilizations. This iteration of the campaign has been updated to D&D 5e from the original AD&D 2nd Edition. It is set in the Forgotten Realms. My typical gaming style is a healthy mix of exploration, social interaction, and tactical combat. I don't lead players by the nose and prefer the players to be proactive in pursuing their characters' goals. I also encourage players to interact with the setting and environments. Using social interactions or details of the setting to bypass or steamroll an encounter is smiled upon. I am not an adversarial DM. I'm not trying to win. I do, however, believe the game is the most fun when the villains of the story are smart and formidable and I attempt to play them that way. PC death isn't an everyday occurrence in my games but it does happen and I don't go out of my way to avoid it. I view combat as warfare and not a sport. The bad guys don't know they're supposed to lose and they try not to. My primary roles as the DM are to collaborate with the players about their goals and desires, depict a believable and engaging setting, and portray capable opposition for the characters. I don't push players to make specific decisions for the sake of "the story". The story comes from the free decisions of the players not from me. I create and present what I hope are interesting situations. I don't create the story. That's the players' jobs. I am not a slavish adherent to the Rules as Written. I believe the rules of the game should provide a solid framework for play but I don't mind straying from them in service to the game. I make every attempt to be consistent in my rulings, so that players understand how things work and can make reasonably informed decisions. I don't bend the rules just to get the upper hand on the players.

About me

I've been playing and running role-playing games for the last 30+ years. In my opinion it is by far the most fun you can have with your brain. I enjoy the comradery and social aspects of the hobby; sitting around the table (or screen) joking and telling fun stories. A significant number of my oldest and closest friends were first made playing these games.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created as a group in Session 0. I haven't decided on exactly what resources will be allowed. We'll do character creation together in order to have a party that fits thematically together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

I would prefer a webcam but it isn't absolutely necessary. A mic is required. Foundry VTT runs on Chrome or Firefox, so one of those browsers is required. Characters sheets and dice are handled by the VTT.

What Andrew Cooper brings to the table

I will prepare the maps, tokens, and whatnot required to play online with a VTT. Players shouldn't need anything more than their computer. Rulebooks are encouraged but not required.

Safety

How Andrew Cooper creates a safe table

I don't run particularly gory games but there is a generous amount of violence. It is D&D after all. Also, the bad guys are bad. They engage in things like murder, torture, slavery and whatnot. I don't glorify these things but they do exist in the world and will likely be mentioned. I will not be playing through these terrible things. That's absolutely not necessary but they will be implied.
