    About the adventure

IT'S TIME TO PRINCESS UP. You’ve earned a sword! You’ve won a crown! Now you have a responsibility to help keep Awesome World awesome and safe. Are you PRINCESS enough?! Stay up late with us and play The Excellents, a one-shot adventure set in AWESOME WORLD, a cartoon realm of fun and whimsy. Highjinks will abound in this nighttime themed game that begins as the princesses gather for a cozy night. Movies, snacks, and gossip are waiting...but first, adventure calls! Regardless of experience level, anyone who has ever imagined playing as a character from classics like Adventure Time and Stephen Universe will love this collaborative narrative experience. The Excellents runs on the POLYMORPH SYSTEM. Each player only ever uses ONE polyhedral die: a d4, a d6, a d8, or a d10. Each die represents a different character “role” in the group. Whenever a player asks “can I do something?” they roll their die and with a quick glance at a resolution matrix, know if they succeed. There is NEVER any math involved (no modifiers, no masters). Depending on the game world and what kind of character that you are playing, you may roll with advantage or disadvantage (or not need to roll at all); and the GM (the person running the game) never rolls dice.

    Additional Details

    How to prepare

Because the game will run on Zoom, you will need a standard video conferencing setup. We do not require that players be on camera, but it's always nice to show your face, so your fellow players know you're human! Your GM will teach you how to play and help you create a character. You may bring your own polyhedral dice if you wish—if you don't own any, though, no worries. Your GM will share with you an app for rolling dice online!

    What I provide

We will come prepared with some basic adventures, digital character sheets, and years of GM experience!

    Gameplay details

Gameplay is mostly non-violent, cozy and cooperative. Though the princesses have swords (because swords are AWESOME), the focus here is on working together, being pro-social, and winning the day with kindness, knowhow, and bravery. A typical adventure in The Excellents will have the princesses planning a big party, and running into zany obstacles along the way—like a villain who's sabotaging the affair by manipulating the weather to guarantee rain, or a sinister force of mood-wrecking professors who are guaranteed to turn the party into a big lecture. This is a great game for children and adults who want to play together, and it is for all genders—boy, girl, and nonbinary princesses are all warmly welcome!

    How will character creation work

Character creation will happen during the session, and we'll give you some ideas and inspiration for creating someone that's fun to play in the world of the game. If you'd like to check out the character sheet beforehand, we've provided one in the prep materials! But because this is a "Learn to Play" session all you need to do is show up.
