About the adventure

Wanna be wacky superheroes? Wanna be science fantasy war criminals? Wanna be space pirates discovering ancient portal tech while running from the cops? Wanna be a blatant ripoff from your favorite shows? Here's where you can do that. GURPS is short for Generic Universal Roleplaying System. That means it can do pretty much anything! This game is meant to be collaborative: Players will work together with me to make up a list of themes, genres, or concepts to include, and I will come up with a world and plot that incorporates all of it with their feedback. This system can bring your crazy ideas to life, providing a backdrop for epic struggles and over-the-top character interaction. Create a flawed character and let them run wild with other flawed characters! Be a hypercompetent weirdo! Roll into moments of absurd glory!

How to prepare

I typically don't play with cameras on to save bandwidth in case players have less-than-stellar Internet connection. A decent microphone will be needed, at least good enough in quality that you can be clearly heard without too much distortion or fuzz. Most commercially available wired or Bluetooth headphones that include a mic meet this requirement. You'll need accounts on Discord and Roll20 in addition to this site; Discord is how I communicate with my players, and Roll20 is where I run my online games. Reading the rules beforehand will certainly be helpful for this system. It's not as easy-to-learn as others I run, and there's a lot of moving parts involved. That being said, I've put together a Google Drive folder with PDFs of GURPS rulebooks, including a Lite version of the core rules. You'll find it in the list of pre-game links once you sign up, along with my Discord server and the game's Roll20 page. The Lite rules are definitely enough to rely on for basic knowledge of how the game works, though you're going to need the complete rules and/or other sourcebooks if you want to see the gritty details. The game on Roll20 has character sheets to fill in, and character creation will be handled as a group, step by step. There'll be no need to make characters ahead of time.

What I provide

I'll bring the Roll20 VTT, custom maps (quality depends strongly on genre of game, as my more advanced mapmaking tools don't have options for sci-fi yet), custom tokens (screenshots of HeroForge minis) upon request, and PDF copies of all relevant rulebooks and supplements so players don't have to buy them independently if they don't want to. I'll also provide NPC voices, ambient music (when dramatically appropriate), an engaging story, and interesting physical and social conflicts, incorporating player characters' personal lore whenever possible.

Gameplay details

There will be a link to the Lines and Veils document for the game available once players sign up. Macros for various safety tools will be implemented in the VTT itself. I will explain their intended use during Session 0, and upon request at any point afterward. Players will be able to request a break at any time for any reason, and I always make sure to talk to my players after the session concludes.

How will character creation work

Character creation will be handled in Session 0 (any additional Sessions 0 required after the first will be charged at half price). GURPS character creation functions entirely on a point buy system. Starting point values for characters will be 200 points, with a 75-point disadvantage limit and a 5-point quirk limit. This will put players at roughly the top end of average starting power level. All of the sourcebooks I currently have legal access to are on a Google Drive folder. Players can use any of them, but all character choices will at least have to make sense for the world that we create.
