About The Great GM (Kevin)

Hi, I'm Kevin! I'm an actor, comedian, and Game Master based out of Ontario, Canada. I've been obsessed with Roleplaying Games my whole life and after almost two decades of honing my TTRPG knowledge and skills, I'm finally ready to offer my expertise to you! I love roleplaying and immersing people in stories, but I also love the gamification that makes combat and other challenges exciting and rewarding. For me, it's gotta be a fun mix of both. I use a lot of "Rule of Cool" when needs be, but also follow a lot of "Rules as Written" to keep things fair. I use Discord and Roll20 to run my games. I have a pro subscription for Roll20 so you can simply use a free account! You won't have to pay any extra for my service to use all the cool extra features Roll20 gives us, like streamlined character creation, click-for-action character sheets, fog of war, tokens, maps, lighting, music, and tons of other stuff they're always adding and updating. My best GM knowledge is in D&D 5e from 2014, specifically the Forgotten Realms setting, but I'm willing to learn the 2024 edition if more players demand it. I also have a homebrew world that players can use to create any kind of story they want. The land of "Feredyer" (pronounced: fair-EE-ah-deer) is a fantastical location of my own creation and its numerous varying landscapes can be given the history and intrigue of whatever kinds of stories you want to explore. I got started GMing...

A friend of mine in college was our forever GM and he was fantastic. I learned a ton from him, so shoutout to "The Professor," as we called him. My first real time GMing was in 2016 after having listened to "The Adventure Zone" with GM Griffin McElroy. I loved his storytelling and use of music!

My favorite system of all Time is

I have to go with D&D 5e (2014). I know it's not as legendary as 3.5 and I haven't read the 2024 rules fully yet so maybe I'll come around to that. But I can't deny the pickup-and-play accessibility of 2014's 5th ed. I feel like its loose rules really help new players understand quickly and have fun

When I'm not running games I'm...

writing/performing standup comedy or acting in a play/musical. I love performance, music, and public speaking. I also run 3 campaigns out of my basement which we've totally dedicated to board games and TTRPGs. I love painting minis and building terrain!

How The Great GM (Kevin) runs games

I love roleplay and immersive, character-based stories. A lot of the stories that happen in my games come from the very characters my players make! I listen closely to backstories and weave them into an overarching narrative that can be challenging and rewarding all at once. That being said, I also love a good "out-of-book" pre-written campaign too! Throw in some great moments of improv, a few memorable NPCs and fun voices, and you've got a classic "Great" session.
