About me

📜 “The objection to fairy stories is that they tell children there are dragons. But children have always known there are dragons. Fairy stories tell children that dragons can be killed.” - G.K. Chesterton 💭 Greetings ladies, gentlemen, mages, and those of us who know better! 👁️‍🗨️ My name is Sable Morningstar, and, should you so choose, I will be your Keeper of Monsters and Mysteries this evening. I have been playing tabletop for over ten years, and running games for nearly that entire time. I fell in love with it the instant I sat behind a DM screen not but a few months after my very first game. When not telling stories at a tabletop, however, I can easily be found behind the keyboard of a story-based video game (or colony sim, lol), nose-deep in a book, or writing up my own stories in my room alone. I consider myself a storyteller above all else, no matter the medium or genre. 💀 My favorite genre to play and run is horror. Complicated monsters and horrifying science and the things that go bump in the night. Followed quickly by any kind of fantasy in the realm of Miyazaki or Tolkien. I’ve run Sci-fi games less than the rest, but I would be thrilled to get a chance to do more. I grew up watching Star Wars and Robotech, Indiana Jones and Lord of the Rings, My Little Pony and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. I have read avidly and intensely since the age of eight, across all genres of fiction. My experience is wild and varied. I have a background in play-by-post roleplay, MMORPG roleplay, and LARP, all long before I ever picked up the art of being a Keeper. My absolute favorite game system is Monster of the Week, but I love to try new ones every chance I get. 🌎 I pride myself on worlds that live and breathe, that feel like opening a door that suddenly appeared in the back of your closet. Worlds that feel like entering into a place that has existed long before you, and may continue to exist after you. This, however, doesn't mean I don't want you to be connected to it- quite the contrary. I love to interweave characters, lore, and plot in as many different ways as I possibly can. My worlds may exist on their own, but they are not real until you step inside them. 💞 I believe that ttrpgs and stories are the greatest source of empathy we have in the world, for ourselves and others. They give you a space to safely explore themes and narratives that might otherwise be too frightening or intense to face in the real world. They allow you to embody people, lives, places, thoughts, and feelings you might otherwise never have a chance to experience. You can hurt, cry, kill, and more without it affecting your real person. You can know what it would be like to be a terrible person, and be able to step away from that in the end. You can experience the entire world ending, and still wake up in the morning to see your own world still intact. The ability to do all this and come out the other side changed for the better is half the reason I do this. I would love for you to get this same chance. 🫀 I am here, queer, and extremely friendly to anyone of any persuasion who wishes to sit at my table. You need only tell me if I have to pull up a different kind of chair. Safety tools are a major part of my table, and I want any issues that come up to be resolved ASAP. If you’re a brand new player, I want you asking any and all questions you have. 📝 So please, if you would do me the honor of joining me at my table, I would love to bring you through an adventure catered just to you, and what you can bring to this- to OUR -world.

GM Style

📚 “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” ― Oscar Wilde 📖 I love to put an emphasis on player choice and narrative, and the rule of cool/rule of good-storytelling will always preside over any game rules. The story that we are telling together will always come first. But, I would be lying if I said I didn’t also love working within the framework of the game system being used to work the genre to its absolute fullest. Mechanics, when done right, work hand in hand with roleplay. What’s the point of playing Monster of the Week if you don’t deal with a monster every week? Why be a druid in DnD 5e if you’re not using wild shape? A rogue without sneak attack? Why are you playing Dread if you don’t dread what’s coming around the corner? 🔧 I like to do what I call "Cow Tools Worldbuilding", which is to say the Far Side comic about the cows making tools; the mere idea that the cows may need tools brings up a plethora of questions. Why would they need those tools? What are they made of? How did they learn? What do they need the tools to do? Why would they be shaped that way? In other words: if X is true, then what else must be true? This is a style of worldbuilding I have done for a long time and only recently found a name for. 🚪 This allows for a lot of player agency; for characters be entrenched in the world we’re playing in. You will be equipped to make informed decisions within the game space, and your actions will affect the world in a meaningful way. If you choose to save an NPC, I will have that same NPC come back to help you in your moment of dire need. You can decide who rules a hamlet, and many sessions later return to see the ways it has changed due to your decision. The world is yours to change. ⚔ In addition to player agency, my worlds always come with reasonable consequences in a good way. A game is not interesting to me if there are no repercussions in regards to your choices. If you fail a roll and the answer is merely “you do not succeed” then we might as well not have rolled. But if you fail a roll and the answer is “You reach with all your might, and though you grab the artifact just before it can fall, you plummet along with it.” Well now we’re talking. 🥽 Safety and player comfort is of utmost priority to me. I want you to tell me the instant there is an issue of any kind. I will do my absolute best to stop and ask for clarification whenever I think we need it, and to warn ahead of any possibly intense scenes. I use consent checklists whenever possible, as well as lines and veils, and X cards. Especially given that my genre of choice is often horror, I make a point to check in as often as possible. I look forward to working with you!!
