About Shukin

Hello there! I'm Shukin (he/him), long-date roleplaying games aficionado, always doing my best to get better at my trade and bring the best experience to my players! Freelance artist by trade, I've dabbled in a bit of game design and homebrewing, and I don't shy from creating custom content for the games I run, so if you want something that's tailored for you and the group, we can work together!

I got started GMing...

On my teenager years, when I presented my school class a simple local system and ended up running games for them for the next two years before I had to move to another school. I'd say that guided me towards being able to teach new systems and experiences well, and I enjoy helping those around!

My favorite shows/movies are

For newer series/animes, I'd say the Arcane series, Dungeon Meshi (Delicious in Dungeon), Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Star Wars: Andor, Shangri La Frontier, and a few others, but those are some of the best fun and drama I've had lately! Hajime no Ippo, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo as well!

How Shukin runs games

The three pillars of playing are paramount, but depending on the player's playstyle I end up adapting over the time between more combat, more roleplay or more exploration. I'm used to running custom campaigns as well as official material, bringing in a tailored experience to those I'm running for. Reflavoring is pretty much always permitted, as long as it follows the original spirit of the abilities and skills in-game. Combat is aimed to be flavorful and tactical, throwing in a few twists and turns that push it towards narrative first but pressuring the players into getting adrenaline pumping with the uncertainty of success. As a dungeon master, I don't fudge rolls, but I'm also partial to running them behind the screen so there's less number crunching by the players and more focus on the story itself instead. I'm completely fine with running the entire game in the open, though!

I deal with rules issues by...

Checking the written rules if I'm aware where to find the information, or making a fast improvised ruling if it might take more than a few seconds. We all have more time after the session to course-correct on those mistakes for next time!

Rules are...

Important towards the overall experience, but not constraints that can't be crossed. Certain systems give you the best narrative experience towards certain stories, so it's better to find something that fits what -you- want than to try molding something into what it's not!

Shukin's ideal table

The focus will always be in bringing in the best experience for that kind of table, every single time. Some games are dramatic, tense, while others are jovial and light, but I'll never hold a player from injecting a little bit of fun and whimsy to the game! Specially because comedy is needed to temper the mood when things are too intense, and everything connects with you much better if you're open to your own vulnerability, and both comedy and drama are two sides of the same coin in that regard!

I love it when a player

takes their time to get in their character's shoes, immersing themselves into the story and pushing the game towards action and interesting situations. You don't need voices or acting lessons for any of that, you just need to consider what pushes the story forward and take decisions based on that!

I think metagaming...

is a difficult thing to manage in most cases, but I'll always let you know if your character should know some certain information ingame based on their background or their particular skills. Ideally, we all know it's impossible to completely avoid doing it, but the effort is well rewarded in the end
