About Phoenix

I'm relatively new at GMing, I frequently run D&D one-shots for friends and family, and have the materials to run a few other games as well, such as Daggerheart and Cyberpunk Red. I am also writing a D&D adjacent world, which I will be play testing as soon as I get it done.

I got started GMing...

So my GMs could play some games. I had so much fun, that I just kept doing it. I also had started writing a D&D campaign for my niece, since she was the GM for her school club.

How Phoenix runs games

I much prefer roleplay heavy games, but please don't get too carried away. When I write combat, I will rarely make a battle unavoidable, there is almost always a non violent solution. There is also always a way to induce combat in friendly situations, though I don't do pvp unless the game specifically calls for it, like Paranoia. I also love puzzles, almost every game I've ran that I've created the story for has had a puzzle in it. I try to allow my players creativity, if you can explain your actions in a way that makes sense in the world, I'll likely allow it to work. My most recent example of this was when a player got swallowed by an enemy and dropped a dagger that had been heated with Heat Metal. Enemy automatically failed the save because it couldn't drop the dagger.

I deal with rules issues by...

looking up what I don't know off hand, and making my decisions based on that. I do work with Rule of Cool, but not at the expense of the balance of the game. Yes, the create water, freeze water combo is a great weapon, but fall damage is still 1d6 bludgeoning damage per 10ft no matter the size.

When it comes to voices

I'm not very good at voices, but I at least try to do an accent, like a Southern American accent for small village bumpkins, or a posh British accent for high class characters.

Phoenix's ideal table

The table vibe depends on the game, but I prefer a laid back setting, with just as much above table talk as in character. Feel free to ask questions. The best games end up with inside jokes, and new friends.

I love it when a player

Does something creative, like using a spell in an interesting way, even if it's just roleplay. Prestidigitation to change the color of their clothes, or flavoring a Bead of Nourishment. That sort of thing.

My table is not the place for...

Main Character Syndrome. Parties are teams, everyone deserves the chance to be in the spotlight.
